We haven't played them competitively since 1998, and the prior encounter to that was 1989. Bit of a wait.
Grimsby fans probably are, they went from Championship to Non-League in that time while we went from League Two to PL to Cup Finals and Europe
That's the last time I went then. The first time was in 1965/66, one of my first away games. We drew 1-1 and Matt Tees scored for them. The Humber Derby was a very big deal in those days. Blundell Park was heaving, I remember that, and City took thousands across on the Ferry. Lot of friendly rivalry then.
I honestly think that if I was from Grimsby I'd throw myself into the North Sea and pray for Poseidon to drag me under. Hull isn't exactly Monaco (understatement) but Grimsby is the worst place I have ever been. It has literally no redeeming features whatsoever. Their forum seems to have a lot of comments about us and they appear to have been made on a regular basis, yet I've never heard a single City fan reference Grimsby in any way. Scunthorpe and Lincoln, yes. Grimsby, no. Is it just envy on their part?
I went to a folk night there a few years back held in a church. You wouldn't expect to meet resentment because we were from Hull ( four of us) at a gig like that. But we did. It was simmering all night, seemingly they are all convinced that every penny of Government money for the region is spent on the North Bank at their expense. Stems back from the days of Humberside County Council apparently. They knew we were from Hull because one of our party was performing which is why we were there. It was a paid gig and we had to wait until every person had left the building and every other artist had been paid out, all the chairs safely put away, floors swept, kitchen and bar cleared etc before they begrugingly handed over our friends share of the door money. Ours was the only car left on the car park when we left and I fully expected it to be on bricks. You could cut the air with a knife all night and it was they who invited us !
Had some great friends over there and spent many a weekend on the piss over there ( Freeman street and the docks area ) so not exactly the best bits, never came across any animosity because we were from Hull.
First City game I went to was against Grimsby 1961/1962 season. Beer bottles being lobbed about. Not young yobs but big blokes who looked like they worked in fishing or on the docks.
Huge chip on their shoulder Oh and they're wrong by the way. There plenty of public sector funds which flow from North to South.
Having lived on the outskirts of Grimsby since 1986 I can confirm that Grimsby itself is a sh1t hole .. much like large parts of Hull are a sh1thole .. having worked here since that time I really don't know where some of you get your ideas from tbf .. Grimsby folk unlike the majority of ignorant fkrs from Hull actually speak to you. I remember my first day working here when stood at the bus stop and was greeted to a round of good mornings from not only those stood at the stop but even some on the bus .. now being originally from Hessle I thought at first they were taking the p1ss but nope .. they were and still are a friendly bunch. So before a lot of you throw the stones for the sake of it try looking at your kin folk and seeing the sh1t holes they live in and the ignorant way they are. Life doesn't stop on the borders of Hull ! Although reading some of the shyte on here you'd think it did.
****, the poor lad's gone native. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family during this difficult period guys.
I lived in Cleethorpes for a couple of years in the late seventies, and could never bring myself to go and watch them even when City wasn't playing. Still made the journey back to watch City even though the bridge wasn't built back then.
