What is your best memory of a particular saints game ? Strangely mine is their 5-2 defeat at the Dell by united, only for the fact I was honoured to see George best at his peak he was a different class that day, it has always stuck in my memory,4-0 defeat of spurs was probably best performance for the whole 90 minutes.

    Saints 8-2 Coventry 1984
Saints 5-1 Sheff Wed 1984 cup replay - this was just as Wednesday were on the rise back to top flight football and people were looking for a shock; remember Steve Williams screamer?
Saints 4-1 Palace (team of the 80's) 1979; Terry Venables had assembled a team in the old Div 2 that had been promoted and then won it's first couple of games in Div 1, which immediately got them braded the team of the 80's in 1979!! Well, they came to TheDell and we gave them a lesson.... Phil Boyer with one of them I remember
Saints 4-0 Spurs 2003 cup - nuff said already
Saints 4-1 Carlisle JPT (great occasion)
Wolves 0-6 Saints 2007 (my son's first away game; he as 5) - Wolves were applauded off the pitch as they had played so well and dominated Saints - Bart even saved a penalty
Saints 3-1 Walsall 2011 (my first promotion witnessed) - simply wonderful day.
Saints 4-3 Ipswich 1982/3 - Ipswich were the runners-up in the league each year back then and came to The Dell with high expectations. We had been on a bit of a downer in the post Keegan era and to add to our worries, Shilts was injured and Peter Wells was named in goal. We were soon 3-1 down to Alan Brazil, Paul Mariner, Eric Gates et al, but came back to win 4-3. Loved it.

Edited to add the game we said goodbye to Alan Ball, maybe Leeds 2007??
    And MLT testimonial

Saints 9.....Wolves 3 at the Dell sixties can't remember the date......3-3 Nottingham Forest FA cup at the Dell......Saints were playing the then team of the day 3-0 down 10 minutes to go again can't remember the date. We won the replay at white hart lane as well. 1976 cup final.......just because we won it!!! Saints win against Coventry 8-2. Win against Pompey at the Dell one of the youngsters came off the bench and opened his account. Not sure probably our last game against Pompey at the dell. A victory over spurs at the Dell I think it was 4-0. It turned out to be Glen Hoddles farewell game I believe as manager or very soon after as we beat them at the lane as well, not sure in which order. Our Victory against MK Dons last year. Our last game of last season was awesome the atmosphere equaled most from the Dell.
To be honest I am not doing justice to saints. Simply because I have been lucky enough to have been supporting them for so many years, there has been so many games I have witnessed which were outstanding games.
I am of course talking about the Derek Reeves years or george O'Brian, Martin chivers, Micky Channon, Ron Davis, Keven Keegan and of course Matt Le Tiss. Just to name a few. My memory is not what it used to be and most dates just converge into one. There has to be a hell of alot more games that deserve to go into the list above, that without prompts, I cannot bring to mind. so above is just a few............

One of mine was watching MLT and the Wallaces run riot at QPR. The same season we also put four past Liverpool at home. I think 89/90.

Hoddle was sacked after we beat them at the lane in the league 3-1; he walked off the pitch to a chorus of "you're getting sacked in the morning"

  6. Beating Liverpool 4-1 at the Dell in 1989.
The ZDS final against Forest in 1992 even though we lost.
Beating Spurs 4-3 in a league match at the Dell in the early/mid nineties.

The match that will always stand out in my memory is winning away at Leyton Orient last season basking in glorious warm sunshine. When Barnard put us 2-0 up and we were all singing "We are going up". Brilliant day and I was lucky to be there.

Saints 8-2 Coventry - 1984 - We had one of the best teams in England at that time
    Saints 6-3 Manchester U - 1996 - Great day at the Dell
    Saints 3-2 Arsenal - 2001 - Le Tissier's last minute winner
    Saints 4-1 Carlisle - 2010 - Wembley cup final

Those stand out but there are many many others

How many more times is this particular thread going to be started?

I have already said it was the game against QPR when they were managed by Dave Sexton. It was a one all draw with a brilliant goal scored by Channon from a superb over theshoulder pass from Paine. The football was superb from QPR and the game was like chess - absolutely engrossing to watch with so many talented players.

It will be asked as often as we all rush to answer it. Our FA Cup semi at Villa and the 3.2 against Arsenal in the last game at The Dell.

Hmm......I loved the 3-2 vs Newcastle when we were 2-1 down until about the 80th minute. If memory serves, Neil Maddison scored followed by a blast in to the left of the goal by MLT with the last kick of the game. That or the 5-4 against Norwich when Super Ken nodded in the winner.

Beddy, it was St Marys, FA Cup, 3rd round, 4th January 2003. We'd beaten them 1-0 in the league, the previous Wednesday. The 3-1 game at WHL, was the next season, when Kevin Phillips had just been added to the side. And FLT mentions what was chanted to Hoddle.

Indeed, if people will keep responding, other people will keep on asking. I don't really have a personal favourite, as I can always think of another, once I've settled on one. Currently, I'm feeling that the 4-1 dismissal of Liverpool, in Oct 1989 takes some beating. Liverpool went on to be Champions for 1989-90, yet our Lads made them look ordinary. I've just looked up the team. Reads like a SFC who's who. Doddsy's second match for Saints too:

    Flowers
    Dodd [home debut]
    Benali
    Case
    Ruddock
    Osman
    Le Tissier
    Cockerill
    Shearer
    Rideout
    Wallace
    Sub: Baker

    Another very good Saints team.

    Many many wonderful memories

Luton 1 Saints 2 (1978 - victory with last minute pen to put us in pole position for promotion back to 1st division)
Saints 4 Wolves 2 (1980 - first game at the Dell)
Saints 5 Coventry 5 (we were 2-4 down at half-time and came back to lead 5-4. Coventry got very well deserved last mniute equaliser)
Saints 3 Newcastle 1 (1-0 down with a couple of minutes to go under Alan Ball)
Saints 6 Man U 3 (great goals and always good to see United lose)
    Saints 2 Watford 0 (FA Cup semi-final)
Saints 4 Carlisle 1 (JPT final and great occasion)
Saints 3 Walsall 1 (great celebration)

Add to that all the end of season victories when we had to win to stay up.

The last game at the dell will always be my favourite game,
Unless we come from 3-0 down to beat ac milan in the champions league final.
Then it would have to be either watford semi final or play off semi final away at derby,
Only because ive never been more happy than when rasiak scored

It was 2-1 actually - we scored in injury time - you may have left to celebrate by then!

Best Saints game seen? Does Watford 7 Saints 1 in the League Cup in 1980 count? (7-6 on aggregate). We were 6-1 up in extra time knowing that if Saints scored a second we would lose.......

Southampton 4 - 1 Liverpool 1989 Nearly 22 years ago and I must have seen the highlights and goals over a hundred times. It was my 1st season as a season ticket holder and a huge reason why I'm such a big Saints/football fan now. The football was so exciting. Shearer, Wallace & Le Tissier. I would have appreaciated it more at the time had I of known some of the indifferent and very dark days ahead.

Southampton 4 - 2 Liverpool 1993(?) Alan Ball & Lawrie McMenemy take over and the grey Branfoot gloom is lifted from The Dell and many of us who stayed away as a protest returned on that snowy evening to watch Le Tissier score a hat-trick and begin the years which would turn him from local hero to Le God and international superstar.

Wimbledon 1 - 2 Southampton 1999 Dellhurst park as it was dubbed and the peak to the great escape 99 as 10,000 Southampton supporters took over. A situation that we're never going to see the likes of again. Will Le Tissier be fit? He came off the bench and scored from a corner. I can't remember if Wimbledon scored or not and the match was nothing special, but it doesn't matter.

Plenty of matches and moments, but that's my favorite and two others not mentioned before in this thread

Oh God, that was a horrid match but as you say incredible support and just such an important result. The 4-2 "Valentines Day Massacre" was a belter too, you're right.

Has there been a more horrendous game than the "Rosenthal hat-trick" game...................I still wake up in cold sweats about that........
