They were appropriated by the Lowlanders - who account for 90% of Scotland's population - after centuries after trying to stop a few queer farmers in the Highlands enjoying them. Everyone already knows that Scotland went a bit schizo in the mid-1800s and invented a new history for itself, don't shy away from it.
