We will have to agree to disagree. A relegation battle was not expected by Rafa or Dalian, that much is clear. So cutting out all the excuses about young players etc, he has done pretty poorly over there.

His reputation was already below what was expected of a top club.

Its been awhile since he's held that kind of stature, and Real Madrid was a real ****er for his rep. In the era of player power, having so many top players begging the chairman to get rid would put a lot of top teams off.

What I do realise (and perhaps you haven't) is that newspapers had him as 2nd choice at Spurs, and on the shortlist at Arsenal. I have not seen any comments from those clubs about it so its probably just speculation. I also realise national management is not the top accolade it once was. Its harder to get a job at a top club so that is irrelevant really. Bottom line is if we take the newspapers out of it, he ain't been appointed to any of those jobs or any other top job in a good 5-6 years. There is a theme with the top club appointments:

Man C - Pep
Liverpool - Klopp
Bayern - Hans-Dieter Flick
Barcelona - Koeman
Real Madrid - Zidane
Man U - Solksjaer
Chelsea - Lampard
Spurs - Mourinho
Juventus - Pirlo
PSG - Tuchel

Take out Koeman (who I think will be gone in no time) and you've a bunch of high press managers playing entertaining football - largely younger. Jose is the only other outlier but he has tweaked his style in a way Rafa would not.

He's had a good career, not stellar but he has a solid record with a good trophy collection to boot. He's just done in terms of getting back to the top table.

Dalian finished 9th and got to the Semi finals of the Chinese FA Cup in his first half a season, which was above and beyond where they were expected to be. This season in the new format due to the pandemic and new restrictive rules in China, they finished 12th which is about where they were expected to finish and they lost Carrasco and have one of, if not the youngest side in the league. He hasn't done incredible, but he hasn't done poor either.

Rafa himself said on TV that he had offers from top sides in England as well as Europe.

No one counts Real Madrid in terms of being on a CV, as barely any manager gets any time there. He was hounded out by Ronaldo after Rafa refused to call him the best player in the world and massage his ego. Rafa was also told by the Chairman which players he had to play, Inc. In that infamous match against Barcelona, in which Rafa wanted to play Casemeiro and go more defensive, but was forced to field an imbalanced attacking side, which left them wide open, which Rafa was furious about as he felt he was stitched up, I believe they were unbeaten in the Champions league under him and achieved their biggest ever win domestically and in Europe.

Solskjaer will be sacked soon, Arteta won't last long, Lampard is living life on the edge. Tuchel keeps just about surviving and has been a failure in Europe. So what.

For all the bluster:

Unexpected relegation battle at Dalian - poor performance

Disaster at Real Madrid - poor performance (white flags out)

The managers not being successful - I think you miss the point. The point is they aren't appointing negative managers like Rafa. If they do they go a rung up for Jose.

He's just not of the required style or standard for those types of jobs. Hence he's managing Newcastle's and Dalian's.

He hasn't had an unexpected relegation battle at Dalian, they're not a top side.

He wasn't a disaster at Real Madrid, they are just fickle and change managers at the drop of a hat.

Rafa isn't a negative manager, he does what he has to do to get the job done, if the squad is poor, he's going to play more defensive, then when he starts to mould the side in his style of play, they start playing more expansively. Hence why we started to do so once we had attacking talent like Almiron in the side, just like we played attacking when he first got here when we had a better quality of players. I think you actually need to look in to his attacking history.

Nah he's a massively defensive manager, as borne out by his career.

Reactions: Kryptonite
The only way Rafa is getting another top job is as a stop gap while they wait for a season to end for a target to become available. He's not in those conversations and hasn't been for quite some time. You have to remember the last time he managed a club like that was a good 5 years ago and it was a bit of a disaster. Its a long time in football. He's 60 and his style has never ever changed. Its not like a Bielsa, an older manager constantly adapting.
Really, that daft **** will play the same way until they get relegated.
They don't have the quality of footballer to play the way they do and not get relegated.
Top notch in the championship though.
