My next door neighbour ( Elizabeth ) is black and she popped into the local butcher and asked if he had any beef. He replied " Oh no, black Betty ham or lamb "
This may well true, however back in 1896 when boys wore short pants and Fanny was a girl's name, I was given 200 years to live by my doctor because of exposure to beer at an early age. Shrewd man my doctor, he was 47 years old then and still going strong.
I agree best man / woman for the job and all that but the problem is that the FA are not capable of making that decision in my mind. It's an old white boys club. There is no way that the people doing the hiring could see through their 'unconcious bias' to hire anyone else other than one of their own. I actually think they need some kind of independent process in order to make progress towards a modern FA. Half of them probably need to be managed out and there should be an agenda that demands diversity in the hiring. There are I am sure many, incredibly talented dynamic individuals who would love the opportunity to transform the FA but breaking through the existing barriers is very difficult. Maybe one of those went last night.
Agree with most of what you say with the exception of the highlighted part. For me you don’t get rid of discrimination by discriminating. We need to educate but unfortunately that takes time. Something “demanding “ diversity essentially means you are not aiming to treat everybody equally as there will be a diversity quota to meet. That would be discrimination.
Probably should have worded better. I really mean diversity in the process, mixed interview panels, they should be made to select CVs from a wide range of backgrounds etc. Also this is not just about diversity in the traditional meaning it's about making the opportunity to speak to people with a diverse mindset, methods, previous industry experiences and so on. These organisations are so inbred currently.
