All a bit Mugabe or Belarus. Pretty sure they all know the game is up but won’t ever concede in public. Keeps a significant minority convinced they’ve somehow been robbed and they’ll probably keep that narrative going for another four years.
If the message is confusing, black people won't be comfortable either because white people will inadvertently keeping putting their foot in their mouths
I think the 'people of colour' discussion is a bit of a red herring, no? In his statement he made a whole series of inappropriate comments - South Asians all in the IT Department, girls not liking a football being kicked at them, being gay being a 'life choice', and the 'coloured people' faux pas. Quite amazing to get so many inappropriate comments in one evidence session, his PR team must have been stunned. Had it been one comment he might have been able to apologise profusely and say that he meant to say people of colour and been forgiven. The kaleidoscope of offences is surely the main issue?
He has form for lack of diplomacy but he was forced to resign for using the term "high-profile coloured footballers". If he had said "high-profile footballers of colour" he'd still be in a job. Nuts
As said by raving he also said comments...about girls not liking footballs kicked at them ( but who does) and South Asians going into IT. A whole gamet of racial and gender stereotypes... He must have been practicing!
I know that line was in the headlines, but my reading of the been article was that the range of comments helped him on his way. As for the specific comment, I have sympathy with what both you and Watford say. The semantics seem odd, and language does evolve in these funny ways. One would hope that someone in a normal job wouldn't be punished for making that type of mistake, but given how high profile the issue of racism is in football, one would hope the Chair of the FA could avoid language widely recognised as being offensive...
I think he had to go for using "coloured", when everyone knows that is not an acceptable phrase anymore. Growing up, I was taught that calling people of colour "coloured" was the polite term, but things have changed. However, on the gay comments, I believe he meant that coming out as gay was a life choice, not actually being gay. A moot point really, as he was an arse and had to go.
