It doesn't seem so long ago that this was the approved method of reference to a non-white person. My mother still uses the term with no slur intended, it's too late to get her to change her vocabulary now.

Those who understand these things better than I do might be able to explain. I know there is a difference between a "Kentish Man" and a "Man of Kent" based on which side of the Medway one comes from. But in the absence of such a distinction what, grammatically, is the difference between "coloured person" and "person of colour" and why is one acceptable when the other is not?

The NAACP blurs the issue. How can a nationwide organisation used a banned phrase in its name? Should it not change its name if the offence is so great?

And why, once again, are we getting caught up in American semantic nonsense when it is well known that their grammar and vocabulary are generally of a lower standard than over here?

Good news from the EFL Trophy dead rubber victory last night <ok>

FIVE Charlton players kicked a competitive ball for the senior team for the very first time...

:emoticon-0171-star: Wassim Aouachria (attacking midfield / forward?)

    :emoticon-0171-star: Hady Gandour (striker)

    :emoticon-0171-star: Kasim Aidoo (left back)

    :emoticon-0171-star: Dylan Gavin (unknown)

    :emoticon-0171-star: Johl Powell (unknown)

These young men are the 912th to 916th players to feature in first team peacetime games for Charlton Athletic since the beginning of the 1921-22 season.

Dick Plumb (or any other member) could you let me know the playing positions of Gavin and Powell?
Also please let me know if I have made any other mistakes in the positions or spelling of players' names.

I will add profiles for these players to the Season 2020-21 stats page when time allows :emoticon-0162-coffe

    Well done lads!
One or two could be CAFC Stars of the future <applause>

    I knew a bloke
    Who liked a good joke
    He started on coke
    Became an old soak
    And utterly broke
    But then became woke
    He's now okay-doke.

    So there.

Aoachoria, is a centre forward. Johl Powell is a midfielder but he has played left back for the u23s. Dylan Gavin is a centre forward.

Just to join the general good news about the vaccine. I'll admit I have reservations about safety, as this is a very very fast production - I read earlier that vaccines normally take between twi and seven years from initial research to ending safety research. But anything that starts to get us back to normal is a step in the right direction, so it's a very welcome bit of news. I was chatting just now with a guy in Morocco who said they are starting to vaccinate very very soon with the new version of the Chinese vaccine. Alo good news, but there is a sense that soem of these things may have skipped a few steps with regards safety. Whatever, like football, a win is a win and you just have to be happy.
Fingers crossed the Danish mink farmers don't f**k it all up with some weird covid mutation and we have to wait another year for a mink free vaccine!

I think the Danish incident has to be kept in context. Zoonic diseases have been around since the beginning of time. Covid is a nasty disease and has generated a sophisticated testing procedure which is discovering other examples of zoonic transmission. In Asia, rural people have lived in proximity to their animals for generations and these diseases are common, but have not had the capacity to spread.

If every occasion of a zoonic episode were to cause wholesale destruction of animals and human quarantine I think it would be a backward step.

Deal with Covid on its own merits and investigate any other similar virus separately.

Meanwhile, a thought for the day: people are doubting the wisdom of taking a vaccine developed by scientists, but continue to buy cocaine from a dealer named Kev with 2 teeth and 26 kids ...

I had a brain bleed in early July which caused the loss of sight in my right eye. My sight slowly returned but with double vision so have been driving with a patch. Today I woke to perfect clarity in both eyes. Went out for a two eye drive...how lucky am I?

@dick plumb Did you ever see Aouachoria before his injury?

He came in under the radar and was injured very soon after but had done well for the uinder-23s n a short period.

Given his background and his under-23 performances, does he have the potential to become a first-team squad striker once he is properly match fit?

Growing up through the 50's and 60's the term black was always deemed derogatory, hence many older people found it difficult in the late sixties when the very same term became the acceptable norm. My daughter in law is black, as is my business partner, and neither are bothered by any term excepting the "N" word. maybe the guy just had a brain freeze and is not actually a racist.

Yes I did see him and he looked decent. If he stayed fit he should be able to push his way into first team contention.
