Sunderland travel to Fleetwood Town in the Papa John’s Trophy
    FTFCvSAFC.GIF
Last time out Sunderland lost to Mansfield and Fleetwood lost to Hull, both in the FA cup.
With both teams already qualified for the next round of this competition, the only thing to play for is who finishes top of the group.
Phil Parkinson has already said that a number of the younger players will start this game, Neil, Embleton, Diamond, Saunders to name a few.
Fleetwood have some injury concerns, Ched Evans was stretchered off wearing a neck brace when he collided with Hull defender Callum Elder after just three minutes. Saunders also left the pitch in a neck brace after the winger clashed with goalkeeper George Long seconds before half-time, with both Fleetwood players taken by ambulance to Hull Royal Infirmary.
    Phil Parkinson:
"I think there was an element of playing sideways, not taking up the space quickly and committing players. There was definitely an element of that.”
"Even within that there's still, as I've said, enough chances and enough moments to score. We've got to look at the movement and the desire. If you're putting 38 crosses into the box over the course of the game, really that should result in at least two or three goals."

“Our plans this week are to give some of our U23 players an opportunity tomorrow and there are three reasons for that."
"Firstly, they deserve it after their recent results for the U23s. Secondly it gives us a chance to assess them playing at first-team level, which is good for the club and for everyone in the academy and thirdly, of course, we are through to the knockout stages of this competition already."
“The [selection] rules are quite forgiving, we’ve looked at those and players like Jack Diamond and Elliot Embleton count as senior players, there will be a couple of first-teamers involved, but the rest of the starting XI and the bench will all be young lads.”
    Joey Barton:
“It’s disappointing to go out of the cup because it’s a magical competition, but if there was a year when we would want to exit the cup early it’s probably this one.”
“Thankfully, Harvey (Saunders) is up and walking around although he doesn’t know what’s happened. I haven’t seen Ched (Evans) yet but he’s talking and stuff like that, so the result almost becomes secondary when it comes to players' welfare, so hopefully they’re both okay.
“Early signs are that they’re okay, so hopefully that continues on into the night after they’ve been checked more thoroughly.
“I think he (Callum Camps) has just had a kick, I think he’s just been kicked on it so hopefully it’s not too bad, and Campsy, he’s just taken a whack on it and obviously with one eye on Sunderland on Tuesday and Bristol Rovers beyond that.”

    Injured: Evans, Saunders

    Betting Odds:

    22/12 Away 22/21 Draw 23/10

    My two pence:
After a poor display by the second 11 against Mansfield, I expect that this team selection will be heavily loaded with U23 players looking to catch Parky’s attention.
I’m not that fussed about going out of the cup, but just expected a bit more from the rest of the squad. It certainly didn’t help with using the same failed setup.
Well - at least we didn’t lose our top scorer during the FA cup game. I’m not sure how serious that Ched Evans injury was, but lets hope that it is a big problem for Fleetwood’s promotion hopes.

    I’m going for a 2-1 away win.

Too much youth in that line up mate, he’ll have to include Power, Dobson and Wyke/Graham in there somewhere

I think Graham and Maguire could do with games just to get them fitter but wouldn't want Graham in particular to get in the way of the progress of someone like young Curry who might actually care. Hopefully Diamond, McFaz, Embleton, Neil and Hawkes all play and do well but we do have to play 6 (?) or so first teamers.

excellent thread as usual mate, put down for a loss as i cannot see Parky putting out a team like you have done ,which by the way i totally agree with and would love that team to start,SD can not afford to sack him so he has free reign to do as he feels fit.

It'll be interesting to see what Parky does with the team. Common sense would suggest that a team like RTB's would be the way to go but after an experimental team, by his standards, putting in a poor performance, his instinct will be to put out a full strength side.

It'll be great to see that kind of line up tomorrow night. Parkinson actually planning for the future and giving the younger players a game but like it's been said before, I can't see him having the balls to actually do it

He should use this game to try out a new midfield partnership - Neil, O'Nien and Embleton would have a lot more to offer than what we saw on Saturday.

It would take imagination to be able to think that way - don't think that's part of Parky's forte

I'm waiting for the team selection before I decide to buy the stream this time. <laugh>
