I have a hiatus hernia, so not great for me to eat late.
    Usually around 6pm.

Tuesdays are around 7pm-730pm, as Mrs Rangercol works late.

Obviously, on special occasions or just out for a meal it can be a lot later, but I tend to avoid eating late when I can.

Also, I have a reasonably physical day when working, so I'm usually knackered later on anyway.

Took a walk down to Akbars restaurant for an Indian today - take out obviously.

Eventful walk in - constant fireworks from every angle, and really close. The only other people on the street looked as if they'd crawled from every dingey alley out into the mainstream - homeless, junkies, alkies, some obviously mentally ill. Like some post-apocalyptic movie. Crazy place!

Had a chicken and chilli balti with garlic naan - very tasty, just missed having some yorkies to dip in <laugh>

Put on my Poppas Pizza hat and cooked up some family favourites.
Homemade dough of course, along with the special bolognese topping and tomato, parsley & garlic sauce base.
Throw on some mozzarella cheese and some Hungarian salami, along with some local pineapple, you get a great combination of flavours....... splash on some Roku gin to keep the cook happy, a good night was had by all.

    Calling all wine drinkers!

It's my brother-in-laws 50th in a couple of weeks, and my sister has asked for red wine for him as they have a new drinks cabinet and are aiming for 50 bottles of red to fill it up.

Any recommendations? I haven't a clue. Aiming for 5 or 6 bottles, up to £50 budget.....

    OK, what a joyful question!

I am no expert, and I like a lot of different wines. Does he genuinely like the wine, or is this simply a numbers game to fill the cabinet?

Genuinely enjoys it - malbec is his go to, but a selection has been requested. Have fun compiling your suggestions!

I get my wine mostly through Naked Wines and these are some of my favourite reds of theirs, all under a tenner a bottle.....

I reckon you can get a decent £10 a bottle everyday drinking Malbec at most supermarkets. Old vine garnacha (Spanish Grenache) can also be found very reasonably and can be a lovely drink.

If you want to up the ante a bit I’d go for a couple of £20 plus bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape. Again, found in the ‘finest’ sections of the supermarket drinks aisle. My personal favourite special occasion bottle is Brunello di Montalcino. You can get a brilliant bottle or two within your budget, but might have to go to a decent wine shop (or nowadays order on line) for it. If you take this route please stress that it is for a special occasions and should be drunk while sober to fully appreciate ie drink this one first and then load up on the Malbec!

Now I have to think of the wine to accompany the leg of pork this evening.......a Rioja I think, and all for me because the wife isn’t drinking (I give it 2 more days). Could get a bit messy.

PS having seen Stroller’s list I can commend the appassimento, usually in the form of an amarone/ valpolicella wine from around Verona.

You don't have to spend £10 to get a nice bottle of red.

    Chilean merlot is always nice.

I rarely pay more than a tenner for the stuff I drink at home Col, in fact it’s almost exclusively what is on special offer when I’m buying. But I’ll splash out for gifts and I like a memorable drink on special occasions.

There’s a Chilean 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon recommended in yesterday’s Times - from Tesco, at an incredible £3.99 a bottle*. Has to be worth a try at that price, and if any good getting a few dozen in.

Also 2019 Animus Douro from Aldi at £5.49. But whenever I see a great buy from Aldi or Lidl and head off to my local branch I can never find it.

*12 bottles for under £50 Steels, and a huge amount of cabinet occupied.

Not sure if you can get this brand over there but here in Oz, anything with a Taylor’s label is good ****. In true Aussie form, they are world wide medal winners.
