Fan base and stadium size means nothing, O’Brien was highly thought of by millwall and a large number of their fans which should mean he’s better than league 1. signing a league 1 player who is wanted at Championship screams improvement on paper

See I get that smug. But this should’ve been the match where those players mentioned prove people wrong. It’s their chance. Power and Dobson against a L2 club should comfortably be good enough. As should Grigg and Graham. It’s one of those where, if we were players, we’d be saying to ourselves “I’m going to try my heart out and prove to the Boss that I can do this. He’ll have no choice but to play me next week” none of them had that. Sad reality

If it was a league game I’d agree. But a cup we have no chance of winning was a good opportunity to play the ‘fringe’ players. The result didn’t matter, it was all about getting minutes in legs, in case we need those players, down the line.
He seems to have no intention of using Grigg, in the league, so his inclusion seems pointless ... ... he simply confirmed he couldn't care less about playing for Sunderland. A terrible example to set to the young lads imo.
With injuries to Wyke and graham, and he would be left with no choice than to play Grigg. To get 90 minutes into his legs yesterday could prove important in the coming weeks.
Fair point, although I'd rather play O'Nien instead of Grigg, if we have to, and move Hume up field. McFadzean is a slightly better defender and Hume is wasted where he is. That would make the left side a real weapon and O'Nien has a better leap, attitude and courage than Grigg.
I don’t think onien has ever player up front, so it would be a real gamble to start playing him there. I agree Hume could be better used higher up. But he likes to run from deep with the ball, with the pitch in full view. I like the pairing of him and Gooch. If we win our next 2 games, we are a real tasty position. If by Christmas we are not in the top 2, I will be concerned and tempted to change the manager. But right now, I’m happy.
I wouldn't start him there but would still prefer him to Grigg if those were the only options. What I would do is to move him there if time's running out and we need a goal. If we end up ahead, and no more subs, O'Nien could easily drop back to shore up the defence ... ... Grigg can't even do his own job, let alone that one.
To be fair I can sympathise with Grigg. He was brought for a manager who didn’t him, and now plays for a manager who’s football is totally unsuited to him. It’s a typical Sunderland panic buy, like rodwell, like graham the first time, even going as far back as Flo.
I can't at all tbh. He simply doesn't put in the bare minimum of effort. My Sunday League manager insisted on playing me up front, when I was a defensive midfield player .... ... nevertheless I used to stand in the pub afterwards and the barmaid would crease up because I still had steam coming off me. Grigg probably doesn't even need his kit washing.
Yes, even if Grigg was the only fit striker I cannot see the point of playing him he offers nothing. We seem to have a few CBs who are reasonable in the air, use them as a big lump up front for flick ons and to hold the ball up to bring others into play. I thought the Mansfield striker gave a good demonstration of that yesterday
O'Nien wins headers he has no right to, is courageous and knows where the goal is ... ... Grigg knows where the goal is and avoids it at all costs
