I very nearly got scammed with a sophisticated scam this evening. As a third level of security my bank texts me a six digit code to access my online banking. This evening I got a message on same bank number saying there was fraudulently activity on a card and to login to address given. Logged in and all still looked ok but when it looked for my Iban I stopped. On ringing bank this is a new scam where the scammers can hack the banks phone number and use it. Getting more difficult to spot these. Anyway just a word of warning to you all. Maybe post any other attempted scams you’ve encountered as a warning for others
I never pay attention to these emails, especially ones that point you at the internet. If I really was concerned, I'd phone the Fraud Department number on the back of my card, rather than follow the given instructions.
But that’s the point WJ. This wasn’t an email. It’s from the number my bank issues me with a daily PIN number. This is a different level and why I’m posting the warning
Oh! Not familiar with that protocal. I'm with Santander, & all the communications to me remain within my account online. They send an email to draw your attention to it.
Bring back the good old fashioned bank robbers, all this modern technology, its too easy to get robbed
Ive had 2 one frim the Halifaxand one from another. Both easy to spot as i do not bank with either of them.
Also i got a message from my phone provider to say my payment had not gone through and yes you have guessed it provide my bank details. So i logged on my own account app and yes it had been paid. Never give your bank details or passwords etc to anyone.
If there's a link then its very probably a scam. I never use links sent to me. If you are on a PC you can see the real url of a link by putting the cursor over it and they usually look as dodgy as hell - but even if it appeared legit I would not use it, I'd access the bank or whatever separately in my usual way. I only do stuff on my phone if I am very sure its ok. Don't even have online banking apps as I am not sure phones are as secure.
Good one, Chesh. I don't have any (much) money, so what would they do? It would cost them more in phone calls than my account is worth.
And to be fair, your phone, although the size of a brick, doesn't do that sort of thing, despite it being high tech when you bought it in 1990.
Get 2 or 3 emails a week, all look obviously dodgy, but got one about my tv licence the other week, which was due to be paid, as I automatically renew it, I knew the email was dodgy but it really looked authentic, could see how folk would click on it to renew though. They must have got into the system to know ours and most likely others was due at that time.
One to watch is getting money out in a town, the offenders are opposite in a flat, place etc with binoculars and watch what pin you press, phone the pick pocket who is waiting for an opportunity to dip your pockets, bag etc then hit your account.
I still go to the post office to renew mine and I still buy the stamps to fill the book up over the year.
