Weren't some of those factories ditched by their customers recently because they paid less then min wage? (I'm thinking Leicester here). Just as ironic!
I've not heard of HebTroCo, I'll have a look.
My earlier point though was if I see something, pair of pants, jumper, whatever, not £3 not £300, I have no way of knowing if it's origins are sweatshop or air-conditioned.

I don't know if it's greed or not (and I'd guess you don't either?). Maybe they're producing high quality stuff and paying their staff well with lots of holiday, flexible working, pension contributions, etc. All desirable stuff but it comes at a price.

I'm not advocating Mao suits, but how much of the 'cost' of the fashion stuff goes on marketing and designers to try and convince people that their denim jeans look better with rips in different places? There're only so many variations on a theme for most normal articles of clothing.

There seems to be a gap in the market between the Primark model, (which I still have no issues with*) and the higher end offerings. Well made clothing at sensible prices is certainly achievable, it just needs the marketing bods and designers to stop sneering at 'non-fashion' outlet clothing.

*It's interesting that the Primark model is looked down on for perceived low pay to staff and suppliers, when that's effectively the business model for most Charity shops, which get praise.

Just been to check the ones I did buy, made in China. My wife and kids walked out the shop when I was buying them, I was discussing the fact that they were charging premium price (120 or 130 quid) for made in cheap labour countries, the shop assistant didn't help the situation at all by telling me they were all made to the same exacting standards but I could have made in England if I paid even more ( another 40 or 50 )

Biggest problem is our ever growing consumerism. That's what needs to change. Most people just need to stop buying stuff!
And one related thing that does my head in is virtually every organisation saying how they care about the environment, yet pump out ever more crap, which is typically also packaged in unecessary packaging. Just like people who say they care about the environment. Do they ****. Orrganisations typically only really care about makimg money and the vast majority of people only care about themselves and the here and now. Was in Beverley Tescos (buying food) the other day seeing shoppers, most of whom looked skint, piling their trolleys up with Halloween crap, which will be in the bin by now. If companies and people cared, the stuff wouldnt be produced, sold or bought. Most are hypocrites, ****ing up our planet.
Back to the point, consumerism is the problem.
    Regards, Greta

That was part of my point about marketing. The high end retailers create a demand, that ends up being met by the others in the market, so it's a bit rich if they then complain about over production.

All the products that are now claiming to be 'greener', nearly all seem to start two steps in. All these kids moaning about emissions, have more electrical products, each with a bigger global footprint than the whole house I was brought up in. From memory, we had three electrical sockets in the whole house, and I think they were single gang. The greenest products are the ones you don't get.

:) All gone. Dewhirsts, Twydales, Cindico,.... Seriously, I don't understand where all these people work, even more so given that Driffield is at least half as big again, maybe twice as big, than it was back then!

They were all over the place, centred in Driffield, but all across Yorkshire and up to Peterlee. Literally thousands of jobs; I'd guess over 10,000, vast majority being females, and then all the associated industry. All gone, other than a 'design' office in London. Manufacturing now in Bangladesh, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia.

I haven't been down to Driffield for some time but the last time I was down a lot of my mates were working at 'sack factory' or 'bacon factory'....That's the type of secrecy you're met with when you ask about places of work in East Yorkshire?:emoticon-0102-bigsm

My late Mother was a machinist at Dewhirsts(Didn't they produce shirts for M&S).When we left Driff and moved up here, she worked for lovable(A bra company based in Cumbernauld)......I think she 'boobed' moving up here:emoticon-0140-rofl:

    Edit...Has Twydales closed?

Changed ownerships a couple of times, with the 2 big factories (death camps) both gone. Decades ago! I don't know if all the farms across this area are also gone; I do know of several that have certainly gone. Again, literally thousands of jobs.

Yes, Dewhirsts made (and still do at least 'design' and source) all sorts for M&S. Shirts, suits, trousers, ....

Twydales was a school visit for Driffield Secondary pupils back in my day!! Can you imagine the uproar nowadays if you took a class of 30 kids to see thousands of poultry being given an 'electrified bath'??

I worked at Dewhirst in Driffield for 18 years, mainly at little Driffield. Relocated down south working for Twinings for 8 years ending up now in Cambridge about to take early retirement 20 years on.
In some respects it was easy for me to move but when the Driffield factory shut and then the Little Driffield one about a year after being sold it left many people out of work looking for jobs that weren’t there. Many out of work, much angst but also a lot of fighting spirit. Hope they all moved on ok. Great people.
