In-form Sochaux marksman and Newcastle target Modibo Maiga has told skysports.com that he maintains the ambition of playing in one of Europe's top leagues.

Newcastle tried and failed with a bid for the Malian striker in the summer, before Sochaux threatened to report the English club to Fifa over their approach.

Maiga was angered by Sochaux's stance and at one point he was dropped to the reserves along with team-mate Kevin Anin, as Sochaux chairman Alexandre Lacombe described them as "unmanageable."

The 24-year-old has since said he is settled until January at the very least and has returned to form with a stunning six goals in his last four games, including two braces.

And he has admitted to skysports.com that it is inevitable that he will not be spending the rest of his career at the Stade Auguste Bonal.

Although Sochaux fans have been giving Maiga a hard time for his stance before the transfer window shut, he insists he is not letting that get to him.

"I have had enough of being booed by supporters right now, but anyway it does not stop me scoring goals for the club and making them happy," he told skysports.com.

"I scored a double for them again (at the weekend). I had two chances on Saturday against Toulouse, two goals, just to thank them."

Newcastle are reportedly very much still on the trail of Maiga and North East reports claim they will try and push through a deal in January, something the player does not rule out.

"Newcastle? They are a very good club, I will not finish my career in Sochaux if I am scoring every week - that is the reality of football. I have not invented that!

"At the moment I am here and scoring goals. I do not know when the transfer window opens what there will be. It depends also on the club, but in the near future I want to ply my trade in another top league. It is a genuine ambition, I will accept being booed for that!"

And reading on twitter earlier, @MsiDouglas at the Sunday Sun reckons he's a dead cert to join in January. Sorry if this has already been done, but anyone changing their mind about him?

    Me, I didn't want him - still don't!

The lad seems to be someone who would be like let me leave, I want big wages etc.

I'm not sure if I want him. Quality player, yes, but what we need? I don't think so

A striker? You sure thats not what we need? Ba & Best are doing the business but if one of them get injured we're ****ed.

Maybe but I honestly think most have the potential to do that. He just did the exact same thing as Benny, only difference being he was made to stay, and to his credit has got his head down and performed. Been a big boost for them.

I did at the time and I do now.

To be honest I'm ****ing sick to death of so many people saying "no not him I'd rather have this guy" For **** sick it's obvious Graham Carr knows exactly what he's looking for. In fact I'd say Pardews had **** all to do with any signings other than Ba and Elliot.

Yep. I'd rather have 3 big strikers and one small than 4 big no small. Just has feels like you have more options

This big striker little strikers a load of cock that came about when we had Shearer and Bellamy but the facts were they were both good. What I'm saying is this player looks good and is young and wants to advance in his career.
