i've got to say, it seemed a strange move for mcclaren. for a start there were jobs going in holland where he would have been in demand (vitesse arnhem, twente), then he is interviewed for aston villa but rejected, and then he goes to nottingham forest with the transfer aquisition committee. he hasnt been anywhere near the championship in his 10 year management career, and billy davies had done a good job before him so i'm not surprised in hindsight that he failed to adapt to the championship. however, to his credit he did resign and not take another compensation payment for failure.
 
Swamp, he met with the chairman mid-week and apparently was resigning irrespective of the result this weekend. From what the BBC wrote he was pissed off at the lack of transfer funds. Having said that he was one of my favourites to lose his seat early on, personally don't think he's a good manager. What odds on Hughton being next?

good job at middlesborough, crap with england (though one goal away from qualification), outstanding with twente, crap with wolfsburg, crap with forest. theres much more to it than that, for example, supposed world class manager capello hasnt really done himself any favours with the england job, at wolfsburg he wasnt totally in charge of transfers, he was the coach, not the manager, and for english managers its difficult to adapt, as well as having bad luck at vfl.

he is still highly very regarded in holland though, 1 bad year doesnt change that.

as for hughton, i gather birmingham have had problems financially, any team starved of funds will struggle, whoever they bring in as manager <ok>
 
I think McClaren did well at the Boro and obviously at FC Twente. As you say he is well thought of as a coach and he was on a hiding to nothing going to Forest.
I was also interested to see David Pleat mentioned as part of the Forest set up.
I have never rated McClaren and was extremely surprised how well he did at FC Twente. A good coach but never a manager. The England team always flatters to deceive, I think they beleive their own press TBH.
Hughton has yet to convince me he's good enough to manage. He got a very good Newcastle out of the championship and seemed to be doing well with them until he was sacked by the Magpies. Birmingham have lost some good players prior to the start of the season but he does have some good players and are better then there current position in the league.
We know first hand about managers being able to perform well on limited budgets but in my opinion these pair can't cut it in the championship. It'll be interesting to see who replaces McClaren as they will have the same restrictions imposed on them.
