Some of the best managers in the world have never done anything as a player. Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, even Leonid Slutsky did bugger all as players and have all gone onto manage at a high level.

He has a poor premise too, great footballers don't guarantee great managers - Shearer, Maradonna, Bobby Charlton - the list is endless, as is the list of bang average players who became great managers; Wenger, SAF, Mourinho, Van Gaal.

My reference to Barton was poor choice.. apologies.... BUT dont hold your breath for McCant to ever enter the list of average footballers to become great/good managers... 30 international caps for NI or otherwise..

Sorry for derailing the match day thread. Thanks very much for all the kind wishes, going to need those over the next few months.

I don’t know how to upload a photo - but I have a photo of my meccano like arm :emoticon-0119-puke::emoticon-0119-puke::emoticon-0119-puke:

The staff at HRI have been absolutely incredible.

Its far from the most ridiculous post of the year... the point... we have a manager with no real success as a footballer, who from 4 years of management has shown no aptitude to becoming a successful manager. Colourless, clueless are just some of the things that come to mind. The difference between those you have mentioned and others have mentioned (for those mentioned there are a 100 names that go alongside McCant) who were 'not very good' footballers is that they have shown/ showed that they had what it takes to become internationally recognised successful managers. They thought outside the box, insightful, they were/are brave, they install belief and desire.... they demand respect and get it. To use the phrase, 'when they told their players to jump' the response was 'how high'... they didn't just stand on a touchline with arms in pockets, arms folded watching the games pass by.... thats where we are, thats what we've got... thats the comparison right there...

Totally agree, McCann has achieved nothing as a manager apart from getting Hull City relegated to Div 1. He achieved nothing at either Peterborough or Doncaster & was given the job at City by our clueless owners as he was the cheapest option. His remit was to get City promoted back to The Premier League which he failed to do in spectacular fashion as City were relegated in last position after winning 1 of their last 20 games. He is just not a good manager as anyone can see except our owners whose only remit is to keep City permanently in debt to Allamhouse & earn millions a year in interest. They will never sack McCann & until someone buys the Allams out we are stuck with him & them, which is truly depressing.

You're right, he was cheap, but he was brought in on the premise of getting Doncaster (who traditionally have one of the smallest budgets in League One) to the playoffs. They thought with better players that he could replicate that. And, until our owners sold our two best players, he was replicating it. We don't know if he'd have seen it through and we never will.

From what I've seen, I'm not convinced going forward he will finish the season out with us. This one system and forcing players into it can only go so far and it comes back to a word I keep using under the Allams: ambition.

The real problem with McCann is that no one thinks he is capable of managing a team in the Championship because he managed to oversee a relegation from a position of almost certain safety. Certainly we have not seen this massive change in him that would give us confidence that he would not do the same again. He lacks ability to inspire the fans and frankly comes across as quite boring. Jordy is a shadow of his former self and Greaves the better option. The kid seems to have done little wrong and gets dropped for a bloke who is next to useless when we go behind. He seems to be incapable of changing a system to inspire a win. He did change three players in a like for like change that turned the Bristol game so credit for that but teams know how to beat us. Barton, the odious twat, the obvious example. For me if we get promoted he would have to go anyway as he can’t cut it at Championship level. He might get away with it here and end up mid table but that’s my expectation for this season. Another manager and another really good goal scoring forward and I’m sure that we could get straight back up.

What do you mean you have any read?

I don’t know why it’s funny. He’s the English Iniesta, and exactly the sort of player Pep would be interested in. A real class act and definitely bargain of the century.

Herbert Chapman, who in 3 years at Huddersfield helped them win as many Leagues and FA Cups as Leeds have done in their history, he won the Cup then the League twice and they won 5he League for the third time the season after he left for Arsenal where he set up the great Arsenal side of the 1930s, winning the FA Cup and then 2 league titles in a row, the first time a London club had won the title.Arsenal won a third title in a row after he 0assed away.and has a bust of him to greet visitors to Arsenal's stadium never played football at any decent standard.
Favourite story about him was that he was renowned for sitting in the stand to watch. Absolutely meticulous in preparation and the first manager to oversee virtually aspect of the team, he said that he couldn't do anything once they stepped on the pitch, it was up to the players. One day they were losing 2-0 at Stoke and he was seen running out of his seat and marching into the dressing room. Arsenal went on to win 3-2. A journalist asked a player what he said as it must have been something special to change game like that. "Don't you buggers be hanging about in the bath after the game, the train leaves at 5.30" was what he said the player replied.
