In-form Sochaux marksman and Newcastle target Modibo Maiga has told skysports.com that he maintains the ambition of playing in one of Europe's top leagues.

Newcastle tried and failed with a bid for the Malian striker in the summer, before Sochaux threatened to report the English club to Fifa over their approach.

Maiga was angered by Sochaux's stance and at one point he was dropped to the reserves along with team-mate Kevin Anin, as Sochaux chairman Alexandre Lacombe described them as "unmanageable."

The 24-year-old has since said he is settled until January at the very least and has returned to form with a stunning six goals in his last four games, including two braces.

And he has admitted to skysports.com that it is inevitable that he will not be spending the rest of his career at the Stade Auguste Bonal.

Although Sochaux fans have been giving Maiga a hard time for his stance before the transfer window shut, he insists he is not letting that get to him.

"I have had enough of being booed by supporters right now, but anyway it does not stop me scoring goals for the club and making them happy," he told skysports.com.

"I scored a double for them again (at the weekend). I had two chances on Saturday against Toulouse, two goals, just to thank them."

Newcastle are reportedly very much still on the trail of Maiga and North East reports claim they will try and push through a deal in January. The player does not rule it out.

"Newcastle? They are a very good club, I will not finish my career in Sochaux if I am scoring every week - that is the reality of football. I have not invented that!

"At the moment I am here and scoring goals. I do not know when the transfer window opens what there will be. It depends also on the club, but in a near future I want to ply my trade in another top league. It is a genuine ambition, I will accept being booed for that!"

Seems to be in a good run of form atm, and does seem to want to leave. Would you take him in Jan?

Thanks but no thanks. The way things are going I cannot see us being too interested in him. Best and Ba are looking **** hot at the moment so would take something good to displace them. However things do change.

Demba Cisse is too similar to Ba, Best and Shola where as Maiga is a Striker who drops deep and uses his pace in attacks, something completely different and something we need. Lover does it but not well enough.

If he keeps scoring like that and Carr thinks he's the right character, get him in. I'm not too worried about the alleged attitude, all footballers are like that now. Hell Benny wouldn't be here if we felt like that.

I wouldn't mind Sol Bamba from Leicester as cover for Tayls/Colo either.

Yeah let's sign the guy who is "unmanagable", how long til he decides he want to play for City, Chelski or Utd if he turns out to be a goal machine and does a Tevez?

Has anyone here actually watched much of Maiga?

I personally find it hard to get much on him, but if everyone bangs on about how good Carr is at scouting, why suddenly assume Maiga is **** and not needed at the club?

I think everyones going to prefer Demba Cisse, but he'll cost double what Maiga costs and is older. You'd have thought we'd face much more competition for Cisse as well.

Wouldn't complain if we signed Maiga, as long as he keeps scoring!

Could then get rid of Lovenkrands.

Yeah, being a stepping stone for another club in this league could end up being more harmful than anything. I'll stick with my guns after all and say Cisse would be better.

I would much prefer Cisse to be honest but I don't think we'd be able to get him in January, especially if he stays on form.

For all we know that apparent bid we made could of been Mikes usual crap he spews out for Skysports to report.

Cant stand this kind of response.

Did you bitch and moan when Ben Arfa refused to train and got the plane over here without consent?

No doubt you're the same type of person that kept arguing with people that wanted Gameiro or Gervinho to join Newcastle, because they *obviously* didnt want to play for the club, so why should try and sign them...

Maiga seems like a money merchant and he would leave at the quickest opportunity if he scores a load of goals. But the key part of that sentence is "if he scores a load of goals". That would mean that he is doing well enough to get noticed by the big guns. And it might mean that we would be doing really well.
