Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur for an 8th round Premier League match on Sunday 16th October 2011.

Newcastle United have got off to an excellent start in the 2011-12 season and are unbeaten in fourth place on 15 points, while Spurs have recovered from a shaky start and have won their last four consecutive Premier League matches to put them in 6th place on 12 points with a game in hand.

This will be the 147th time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1905 with Newcastle drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane before winning the replay at St James' Park 4-0. To date, the clubs have met 9 times in the FA Cup.

The clubs met for the first time in the Football League in November 1909 in the First Division with Newcastle winning 1-0 at St James' Park and completing the 'double' over Spurs with a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane in March 1910.

Tottenham's first win over Newcastle came in a First Division match at White Hart Lane in November 1912 with Jimmy Cantrell scoring the only goal of the match.

There were further meetings in the First Division up to season 1933-34 with honours generally pretty even.

An FA Cup 4th round match in January 1935 was won 2-0 by Spurs at White Hart Lane with George Hunt (Spurs' record goalscorer until Bobby Smith) scoring both goals.

The next 12 meetings between the clubs came in the Second Division of the Football League either side of World War Two from 1935-36 to 1947-48. These dozen matches were the only League games contested between Spurs and Newcastle outside the Top Flight of English Football.

The 1950-51 season saw Spurs win their first Football League Championship and in the process they did the 'double' over Newcastle winning 7-0 at home and 1-0 away. The 70,336 spectators at White Hart Lane for that emphatic 7-0 win were the largest crowd at any Spurs v Newcastle fixture in history.

Spurs beat Newcastle United in the 1952 Charity Shield 2-1 at White Hart Lane with Les Bennett and Peter 'Spud' Murphy scoring the goals which won the silverware.

The first Football League Cup meeting came in the Semi-Finals in January 1976 with John Pratt scoring the winning goal at White Hart Lane in the first leg but Newcastle winning 3-1 at St James' Park despite a Don McAllister goal to advance to the Wembley Final.

Newcastle United, along with West Ham United, were the first clubs to be promoted to the Premier League for the 1993-94 season and Spurs won the first match against Newcastle in the competition 1-0 away at St James' Park with a Teddy Sheringham goal. The Magpies had their revenge at White Hart Lane in December with a 2-1 win.

An FA Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford in April 1999 was won 2-0 by Newcastle after extra time.

Newcastle lost their Premier League status at the end of the 2008-09 season but won promotion at the first attempt managed by former Spurs player and assistant manager Chris Hughton. Hughton was sacked under contraversial circumstances in December 2010 and Alan Pardew was appointed as Newcastle's new manager.

Last season's reverse fixture at White Hart Lane on 28th December 2010 was won by Spurs 2-0 with second-half goals from Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale. The return match at St James' Park in January 2011 finished in a 1-1 draw after Fabricio Coloccini had put Newcastle ahead with a fine strike after 59 minutes only for Aaron Lennon to score deep into injury time to salvage a point for Spurs.

During the summer, Spurs signed former Newcastle player (2005-07) Scott Parker from West Ham United.

Tottenham Hotspur have won 61 of the 146 matches played so far with Newcastle United winning 54 and the remaining 31 games drawn.

    Top stuff, 6061 <ok>

    Bit early though, eh?

Should be a good game, Newcastle always seem to cause us problems and their side has started well this year.

You seemed to skip most of the Prem years in your article, should probably have mentioned the 7-1 win by Newcastle in Keegans last game and the 6-1 FA cup tie at SJP under Sir Bobby Robson. Also you have mentioned the Spurs goalscorers but none of Newcastles. Apart from that not bad <ok>

He does Spurs' history, not Newcastle's. Not sure any of us remember the 6 and 7 - 1 defeats. And I will shut my eyes and put my hands over my ears if anyone tries to remind me.

Good as always 60/61 will be a very important game for both teams.the two teams go into the game in good form,a draw could be a decent result for both teams, but not much good either.Newcastle always give us a hard game and at home you have a slight advantage,so i'll go for a Spurs win:emoticon-0116-evilg COYS

I've always wondered if Newcastle United have been more successful when wearing white shirts with black stripes or black shirts with white stripes.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Spurs like to actually play football, opposed t certain 'cloggers' who Newcastle have already played. For this reason, i believe Santon and Ben Arfa should feature. The midfield battle will be an interesting one. Modric and VDV are both very good players but then again Cabaye and Tiote have been magnificent so far this season. One weak area for Newcastle is fullbacks, so Spurs wingers can expose the likes of Simpson and Taylor, so the CBs should be alert. On form I'm going to say a score draw 2-2

No offence but you were definitely "cloggers" on the opening day against Arsenal. After your unbeaten start do you think Pardew has the confidence in your side to open up more and play football against us? Our troubl last season was breaking down teams who threw a lot of players back in defence and hit us on the counter, which I'd have thought would work better for you too.

THFC6061 Well done on another great match thread. We would like to make your articles 'sticky' and use them as match threads for the run up, and the game. This would need a slight alteration to the article title i.e. to include the words '& match thread'. Would you be happy with that.

Great read THFC6061, can understand why Tottenham fans aren't worried but hopefully they'll see we're capable of giving them a very good game, with a weaker side last season we should have beat them!

To be fair, Arsenal were still thought of as a top 4 side at the start of the season and we still needed to gel as a team, so being a bit defensive was sensible against Arsenal in the first game of the season. However, since then we have played some great football, and dominated games such as Aston Villa away and Blackburn at home. Our weapons are the midfield duo Tiote and Cabaye, as they can help us dominate games. Best and Ba have a great partnership going and could trouble you if they start. But I think most Toon fans would like to see Ben Arfa play in a 5 man midfield to give us more possession. If he starts and plays to the level he did against Everton in his debut, he will be a VERY dangerous prospect for you guys.

Always like Spurs matches as my best mate is a spurs fan and there is always good banter. I remember when we went on the run of beating you guys home and away for like 4 years in a row, until our relegation season where we were terrible. Hopefully we can pick that form up again ;)

We clog it when Ameobi plays, but when he doesn't we pass it much better. As the season has progressed we have started to play some nice stuff :)

This is a game I think everyone will look forward to and will be a test for both teams, Newcastle whether they can push on and become a top 7/8 team, Tottenham probably the sort of game they should be winning if they want to finish in the top 4, certainly shouldn't be losing. For me can see a battling decent performance from both teams with both unable to find the winner in a 1-1 draw.
