This simple letter Y pronounced why is a strange one as it sounds nothing like why when used in the word you/yellow and many more. Does any one have an explanation please ?
It isn't pronounced "why" though, surely it is more like, "wye"(as opposed to bye). It is unique in that it can act as a vowel though.

Nope. It's not pretending to be a vowel. It is used as syllable modifier in some cases to produce a different sound. Not a vowel. Not pretending to be a vowel. You're all wrong.
