Forgive me, Ristac, but this post borders on the pathetic. You make so many HUGE assumptions.

Yes, parents get money already to feed their kids. But many don't feed them properly. And for various reasons. Few of which, if any, are acceptable. But no matter who is responsible, a fcukin' lot of kids are still going hungry. Some even die. But at least we know who to blame, right?

And are you the only person in the UK that doesn't know that Social Services are largely ineffective, & totally over-run - and even if they weren't, there simply aren't enough people willing to take the kids in, whether it be fostering or adoption. You also have to bear in mind that the Social Services are hamstrung by red tape, our glorious PC-driven government legislation, and the increasingly likely raising of civil action if an 'i' isn't dotted or a 't' crossed?

So shouldn't our priority be to feed these kids, rather than simply point fingers, á la the tory view? Let's face it, poor kids are unlikely to turn out to be tory voters, so let them starve, & continue to subsidise true tory pursuits - for instance the £500m+ that private schools like Eton save by somehow being able to declare themselves a charity, or the outrageous sums paid out to the Opera

ht once again, drawing in parents that would normally not be in this situation, but I'd hazard a guess that these are parents new to the 'seriously reduced income' quandary & may well be going without themselves too.
In the US, Police have something called 'qualified immunity', which, if I remember correctly is to protect them from civil lawsuits if they make a mistake. The thing is, if they are immune, someone is going to get sued instead, as there are lots & lots of 'mistakes' - often murder. This means that the 'qualified' unofficially becomes 'absolute', as the 'City' & Police Department don't want sued instead, so the best way to maintain this is to protect the cops that make the 'mistakes', even if they are serial culprits. They really are a joke. Apparently there are thousands of illegal searches they carry out - but at the wrong address. None of this knocking the door lark - they smash it down & the house is full of heavily armed cops with guns drawn & trigger finger twitching. I've seen quite a number of Youtube videos of this where kids have been told to lie on the floor with guns pointed at them. And I mean young kids - even 3 year olds aren't exempt! And it's not just black families - it can be anyone when it's a wrong address. Imagine sitting with the family watching tv when the door gets smashed in & a dozen fully armed police rush in shouting that they're going to shoot you if you move. I think it might take quite some time for me to recover from that, never mind the kids! And even though this is costing authorities millions & millions of dollars, nothing has changed.

And all because they got the wrong address. You'd think that checking the address would be high on the list for a warrant. It clearly isn't.

There is no doubt that the parents are guilty in law if this happens.

But it's not just about the law, is it? For a start, there's the state's moral responsibility to ensure that we are all safe, especially the children. But unless a child is a major party benefactor, they'll be ignored. No matter what party is in power.

There's also the responsibility of neighbours, family & friends to report any suspicions. Sadly, even if they do report their concern, it's either ignored or deliberately not acted upon. Even when talking about the lives of children, the prominent words of any discussion are terms such as 'budget', 'hard evidence', 'can't act on suspicions', 'lack of, or priority of, resources' ..... etc.

Sadly, if a death does occur, it's usually someone from social services that takes the hit & they have to fall on their sword. Their department may also be sued, but no-one is punished by law for their criminal neglect. And it's often not the fault of the social services. They regularly pass these cases to the police, and ..... nothing. Or very little when it's far too late. I've never heard of a cop falling on the sword for any such cases. Or be disciplined, far less arrested. Mainly because the Police Force have forgotten the main reason Peel set them up, which was to prevent crime, not wait until it had happened & trying to solve it.

But it's so much easier (and cheaper!) to just blame the parents, isn't it?

You can feed a kid on £15 a week, there is never a perental excuse for not feeding a child.

I know I should stay clear of this discussion because there seems to be a lot of experts on this subject and a lot of political point scoring against different authorities for who is to blame and I don't understand the workings of social services or political agendas in Great Britain. It is easy to blame parents, but then again the authorities didn't force them to become parents and they aren't in individual homes 24hrs a day to baby sit them either. There will always be cases that slip through the net and IMO the authorities and schools can only do so much and the buck does stop with the parent/parents. But hey what do I know.<ok>

There was nearly a decade of youngsters in the mid 80s starting families so that they’d be given council housing, girls claiming they didn’t know who the father was so that they could claim extra benefits.

That culture gets passed down to their kids and sadly you have a huge group who believe the government and system should pay for them. Is it wrong we have kids going hungry, yes of course but the blame lays at the feet of the parents.

I remember reading an article in a newspaper mid 90's about how young girls were getting pregnant on purpose, then saying that they were getting kicked out of their homes because of it, they would then get a council flat and benefits, they would then move back home and the flat would be sub let by them for more cash. I thought this had probably happened on the odd occasion but the paper had exaggerated it. I went to work in Wolverhampton a while later and the subject came up, one of the lads in the warehouse said he knew of 5 girls and their families from his class alone that had done it. Not only that, the sub letters would then use the address to get items of furniture and the like on finance, only not to pay the finance company then would then leave the place about 6 months later when the finance companies were after them, often too they wouldn't keep the goods but sell them on, get a £600 suite, pre arrange to sell it to someone they knew, who had picked what suite they wanted, for about £200.

Always the same. Create a system - someone will find a way to abuse it. It’s a difficult situation.

problem is that whoever’s fault it is... it’s not the fault of the hungry kid, so what do you do about it.
