Compensate the account holders up to a couple of hundred grand and write off all debts owed .

The threshold for compensation at the time was 30 grand. A lot of very rich people were about to lose a lot of money.

It would have cost the country a great deal less to let the banks die.

 

A very attractive proposition on the surface of it. Unfortunately it would have created mayhem in financial markets and the spivs would still have coined it. Best not get involved in economics unless you have at least some knowledge of how it works.

 

We know how it works mate , we pay interest to borrow money the bank never owned it's just digits on a screen and if you don't pay it back they take your property.
