Didn't have them as a kid but started cooking with them regularly since my late teens and they're nice in the right things. I don't think they're as versatile as some ingredients but they full of fibre, higher in iron than steak, less than 1% fat, counts as one of your 5-a-day, reduces cholesterol, etc. In a curry or soup I'd highly recommend, they're also really cheap compared to meat I think (don't really buy much meat).
