I am really not sure Ellers and Goldhawk really get this.
A lot of these kids we are talking about are already on free school meals.
These kids depend on having a hot midday meal during school time...and now won't during holiday times...that is what we are talking about here. They are already on benefits...which incidentally DO NOT INCREASE during half-term or Christmas to account for the parents feeding an extra meal

Also...it is okay the kids can turn up at school with a packet of Crisps and a single jam sandwich...after having no breakfast....and go home to a cupasoup, which is happening today in our country...but that is Ok too.

Also do you know what is involved in having a child under special watch by social services, what it does to the family. A friend of my daughter was almost suicidal after a visit from social services after she had taken her to A andE. This was a young mother who had nothing to fear, had done nothing wrong but was so scared of losing her child. And if the social services had to deal with every child that came to school without school dinner money/lunch we would be recuiting double the number of workers just for that...where is that magic money tree

Absolutely not spot on though. As Beth said, neither of you quite understand it

I received free school meals as a child. My mother raised 4 boys alone after my father sadly passed away when I was 6 years old. She worked every hour god sent to make sure we were fed and clothed. She paid her taxes, paid her bills. Some days it was a real struggle. We were raised to be aware that there was always someone worse off than ourselves. Comments like the one Goldy just made highlight the ignorance shown by many in this country. British children will go hungry this winter. Even if it is through bad parenting, that makes it even more important to feed them. These kids are the countries future and we need to give them as best a start as possible. Circumstances dictate peoples situations. The present circumstances are worse than in most peoples lifetime and money is becoming a worry for many who have never had to think about how to feed their children. Some attitudes are quite frankly disgusting and vile when addressing this.

Sounds like you had a fantastic mum, Bob. I said in my post, that whatever happens, no child should go hungry this winter and, of course, they should get the best start possible. The question is, does the money come from the parent getting benefits, or government?

There will be justifiable cases where government has to step in. May be there has to be an increase in benefits to cover the pandemic and the recession that will follow. But if there is bad parenting, as you say, it seems to me social security should be looking at more in that family than failure to feed the child properly. There may be other abuses going on.

It comes from the same source Goldie, and actually you are are supporting Rashford here. Do you give it in benefits where the very few unfit families blow it on ***s and betting...or directly to the kids in a meal?
(bit like giving a homeless person food and a hot drink rather than giving him money to buy booze with)

This is a very different sceanario to free school lunches over a week at half term and then a 3 week period over Christmas. Poor parenting takes place all the time, and does not just appear for 4 weeks a year

I may indeed be supporting Rashford to an extent, Beth, in that where hardship is caused to kids for reasons that are not the fault of the parents, new money should be found - and yes, I absolutely agree in the form of vouchers, so it goes directly to the kids.

But I just feel it needs to be targeted to those families rather than nationalise the kids with a generic payment to a large section of society, and let bad parents who could feed their kids and don't, off the hook so they can fritter their benefits on booze, ***s and betting etc. Otherwise you cross a Rubicon, in that taxpayers have to pick up the tabs for other people's children, and it's a disincentive for certain types to take responsibility and look after their own children

There's a balance to be had.

PS Bob's Mum falls into the former not the latter category. She sounds an admirable woman

I am still not getting this.
The kids that will benefit are those who are already "checked" and receiving free meals. This was just a 4 week (1 +3 week) extension to what is already happening

This is not a blanket meal deal...Boris was not getting free meals for his six or Rees-Mogg for his clan.
I have no idea at all why this has become such a diversive issue for this government...and why people are getting so worked up about bad people using benefits and not feeding their children. It was only an extension of a preexisting process

I think that is why I am just so angry at this whole issue

Because it is just a stupid legistration

Totally this Beth. It's for those already in receipt and who will struggle during the holiday time whilst within this pandemic. Whether their parents are junkies or just on reduced incomes is really irrelevant as it's the kids who go hungry. Luckily, there are still some fantastic people in this country, rallying around to provide meals for these children. It's just an extension of 2 weeks for the same children who would be entitled anyway.

Political point scoring. The pub just want to get their name in the paper. Pub probably won't be around after covid. I'm sure Rishi will worry.

    1. It worked and got the pub name in the paper
    2. It's not a positive thing that the pub wont be around after covid. People will lose jobs and income.
    3. If a chancellor isnt worried about businesses closing then they are in the wrong job.
But as the article states, it isnt about politics but about humanitrism

Its refreshing to see that people still have certain values and morals in this country and that certain people care about the less well off and whether they will go hungry this winter. It gives a sense of pride. This is what coming together is, shame it's taken a Man UTD player to lead by example.
