OK I got the Carroll purchase cos it was on a free - injured all the time for West Ham, but scored goals now and then, and available on a free and on a pay per play contract.. . Lejeune, like Schar, isn't a Bruce type of player. Centre halves 30 years ago didn't have to be able to play football, he's stuck in that period
Ah makes sense so Bruce want a player like he used to be himself, ie a bruising talentless knacker than just knows how to head the ball away and boot it upfield.
He had Pallister alongside him back then, that's why he got away with not having to play football himself. It was the old classic CB combo of a bruiser alongside a player. He's forgotten that it works best if you have the blend. Plus, nowadays bruisers are no good, as everything is deemed a foul now. Defenders now need to be quicker and smarter than when Bruiser Bruce was in his prime.
Man United went to another level when they got rid of the old guard defensively, and brought in players like Stam, Ferdinand and Vidic to boss the defence, ie players who could actually play and their purpose wasn't just to be a ugly barn door like Bruce. I know that was Bruce's style when he was a player, but any idiot can see that these days your defensive needs to be more skillful, and just brute strength will get you relegated.
