"VAR looked at the incident and decided it wasn’t a red-card offence. I disagree.

"I’ve also heard it claimed Pickford could not be dismissed because Van Dijk was offside — rubbish. Oliver had not blown his whistle by the time Pickford lunged in, so he could still have been punished.

VAR confirming later Van Dijk was offside does not nullify a red. The bottom line is, Coote should have sent Oliver to his monitor. Given Van Dijk was injured, the referee had plenty of time to review the incident."

Clattenburg. Doubtless some will now say, as with Peter Walton's opinion, that they know more than referees on what the rules are. But, eventually (and I hope this is why Liverpool relentlessly pursue the FA to explain their own actions in this case), they will have to admit the basic, ****ing truth - the dicktosses that administer VAR don't know the basic rules of the game.

I'm sure what gomez did v villa and atletico and add in city as well BTW just as a few examples is not a tactic :)

allowing grealish and sterling in on to their strong foot is never ever a good idea. I'd go so far as to say i'd do everything to let them go wider on their weaker foot.

VVD makes the challenge or forces the player wide where his shot is a much lower chance. just because a shot gets a deflection after gomez has opened up the entire goal for the guy doesn't mean gomez has not made a bad error :)

As I said he is outrageously talented on the ball but we can't sit round ignoring players faults and weaknesses.

Well, :) of course once we have the convenient scapegoat in goal I guess its fine though ;)

when you draw the line to get mane offise off his elbow you know you are doing wrong but you do it anyway.

Better memory than me mate <laugh>

He was okay for a backup, he's regressed imo. Wasn't going to get better at his age though

VVD plays the percentages, he always takes the lower risk option (decision making at its finest). Look at the game against Spurs when he left their CM to have a shot making sure he couldn't pass to Son. It's what top defenders do, pair it with patience & timing and you've got yourself a defender. Gomez lacks decision making.

Assuming that you are right about this, does that mean a player could control the ball with that part of the arm just above that sleeve line? To score or prevent a goal. Seems wrong to me

But if that's the case, how is Mane deemed offside because the line was set at his elbow? And you cannot score from your elbow because it's illegal?

I'm getting more and more confused.

It was set to his sleeve. His arm is at an angle so the top part of the sleeve is closer than the bottom part.

Should be all based on foot position imo

Gomez is good enough IMO but in partnership with VVD. Our current defenders will valiantly try to cover his absence but his organisational skills and cool under pressure temperament will be difficult to replace. Just like City found it difficult to replace Kompany.

But worse I think the psychological impact on the opposition will be as important. Just like last season the opposing team was overawed before the start, we could have teams having more confidence testing the defenders. At set pieces and in the counter. The 7-2 defeat doesn't help either. No team in the premiership has conceded more goals than us - an average of 3 per match. The next few matches will tell us more.

Another key feature we will miss is his long range passing, which helps us to get up the pitch quickly. Matip and Gomez are probably both better in terms of dribbling and passing on the deck but their long range passing isn't as good as VVD.

And we must also accept that our defensive numbers have been getting worse since the turn of the year, and that's with VVD in the team. Hopefully him out means the others step up now and take responsibility and cut out the stupid errors.

Jordan Pickford will NOT face any disciplinary action for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk. VAR reviewed the incident but did not deem it worthy of a red card. The FA issue retrospective punishment only for red-card offences that are not seen at the time. #awlfc [@David_Ornstein]

The part in the bold is what I will never be able to understand...

The hilarious thing is that they are effectively saying that tackle is a yellow card at best. 2 feet off the ground, into the knee/shin of a player. However raising your hand and touching someone’s face with zero malice as martial did v spurs is far worse.

Id love to have an hour with some of these refs with a few clips and just sit there and ask them to explain the thought process behind these decisions.

it also means that the statement they gave BT during the game was bollocks since originally they claimed that they had only looked at the offside .

you have to wonder whether these officials experienced referees have had their skills and knowledge drummed out of them to perform the VAR tasks. Just have to rigidly apply the VAR rules to ensure conformity and consistency. The more VAR is used the more we realise that its objectives are not being achieved. Instead of removing subjectivity and uncertainty from the game, they have introduced far more controversy human error and unfairness. Your example: Martial was rightfully red carded for retaliation (albeit mild) but shouldn’t Lamela not have been punished too for pushing his forearm onto Martial’s chest and neck?
