They would play amongst themselves or with other big European clubs. Liverpool vs Bayern would get more attention than Liverpool vs Burnley (sorry to keep knocking Burnley!!). Whether we like or not - the PL (and English football) needs the big clubs more than the big clubs need them.
I didn't read your previous comment that way. I fully understood what you were saying. These proposals have been in the pipeline for a while I believe. I think what may have pushed FSG into action rather than merely ruminating is what happened in terms of what could have been a possible outcome to last season where the likes of Watford and West Ham could essentially dictate a null and void season in order to save their own skins. They weren't thinking about the integrity of the competition, just their own survival. These new proposals go way to far in addressing that situation. I can see the thinking behind it. If 6 clubs can dictate what would have been a major decision in voiding a season then you have to change that but it could be done by altering the 14/6 voting system into one just requiring a majority split. I'm not saying any of this is the right way to go about it but just pointing out that I can see why they have come up with suggestions to changes in voting.
I think personally that people underestimate the power of hype. We can say that people would lose interest in a certain product if it was only this or only that but if we sat down in 1992 and said pretty soon people will have much loved characters dressed up in big suits like American "mascots" you'd be called a crazy plastic. Now we've arsenal people jumping up and down about a big green dinosaur being let go from arsenal. People have got used to games at all hours, on all days. Match day fans have had to put up with it. Do not expect an elitist product to not succeed and do not underestimate the global fanbase in driving all of this. I personally think its shabby as hell
Yeh I agree. A Super League is a terrible idea. I'm not sure Jimmy is suggesting it, more just pointing it out. The game has been taken away from the fans as it becomes more and more unrelateable. It's why having scousers in our team is very important. It helps to keep the contact with the community in which it's based. The advent of the Premier League signalled the way the game was going. It isn't just a business, it's big business. Some fans don't seem to care about bending the financial rules as long as their team benefits. I think the proposal about club ownership is a good one. Countries and states shouldn't be allowed to buy football clubs. I don't think the intention with that proposal is to get overly involved with club owners, I certainly hope not, but more about stopping unfair advantage gained by having a royal family and the like taking ownership. It's something else that has ruined fair competition.
But would the genuine match going supporters be happy with playing European sides every week? Doubtful. I also disagree with your last bit, so what if the big 6 left, the other 86 would cease to exist? Probably lose a lot of money from the game but I reckon that'd be a good thing and most smaller club fans would be all for it.
My main take on this is surprise so many other people are surprised tbh . Nearly all PL clubs are now owned by investors with little or no connection to football never mind the club they actually own so is it any surprise when they keep looking at ways to make more money after all it is only a year or 2 ago the the "big" clubs got the distribution of foreign TV revenue distribution rules changed to increase their take . My view on the actual proposals are from the little i've seen there are some good ideas , some not so good and one obvious definitely No .
What absolute bullshit that is. The value of the PL product is the competition and the passion and nature of English football.
the fans might not sure the chairman would PS as i've said a number of times imo 100+ fully pro clubs is too many and for decades now loads of them have teetered on the edge or fallen over said edge .
Yet more bullshit. One of the reasons for this proposal having the removal of the league cup and the reduction to 18 teams was patently to free up extra slots for an expanded CL format that saw more ‘league’ games. If that’s what Liverpool and United want, then they should **** off and form a European super league, don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.
Probably not but it'd be the best thing to happen to English football in years if you lot all ****ed off imo. Don't understand why lots of big club fans think the rest of us all give a **** about them tbh (not suggesting that you're one of those).
That's part of it, but you're deluded if you don't think it's also due to the star players that big clubs attract.
Agreed and this is why it's unfair to say that the top clubs are the only 'selfish' ones amongst us. Every club is self serving. One thing is for sure - the EFL needs money to survive and this proposal is good starting point for discussions.
Bollocks. Otherwise La Liga would have been the most popular league on the planet for ever, and it isn’t. Why? Because it’s a turkey shoot for the big clubs most weeks, as the financial disparity makes it impossible for the lesser clubs to have competitive sides. The reason the PL has been the most attractive League is due to its competitiveness.
Are you joking? La Liga survived for years on Messi v Ronaldo. There are millions of fans around the world who follow players rather than clubs. The PL doesn't get billions in TV rights because people really want to watch the unique cultural spectacle of Everton fans celebrating in Goodison.
They’ve come up with the idea of giving the ‘big 6’ complete control over the league and making the rest have no effective say, as it’ll give them the opportunity to ram home their agenda. That agenda is what it has always been, they want a larger slice of the TV rights, this is all about money and control, the rest is just window dressing.
No it really didn’t. La Liga sees each club control their own rights, so the likes of Madrid earn similar to the top U.K. clubs yet the lesser clubs earn around 30% of what a lesser PL side earns. So the league itself is less popular than the PL - fact.
That is why LFC and MU have chosen this moment to strike. The owners are American after all. Businessmen who can spot the right time to carry out their take over. Their objectives are not to win trophies or to help the overall game. They are to increase their capital investments and their returns. Let's accept these assumptions: The top 6 are the ones most viewers want to watch. The value of the broadcast rights will be severely reduced by the absence of the big 6 The owners of these 2 clubs want their share of the rights to reflect that. To them it is not right that Bournemouth could get the same income when they have only a fraction of their following. Several times more viewers will want to watch LFC instead of Bournemouth. I have no doubt that the clubs outside the big 9 recognise this. If the big 9 form a new league, adding 3 or 4 new ones, the remnant premiership will collapse and their broadcasting rights dwindle to a fraction of its current value. Lets recognise that only diehard fans will want to subscribe to watching Bournemouth v Burnley and the likes every weekend. Instead of a diet of LFC v Arsenal or City v Everton. The top 6 have the league over a barrel. They are the star clubs and they want that financially recognised. To those who argue they risk killing the golden goose, they just raise the spectre of a European Super League. If that happens that's the death knell for the premiership as far as broadcasting riches are concerned.
Do you think fans in Asia and Americas wake up extra early / stay up really late every week to watch Everton or Sheffield United(!) If this was the case, why do Sky and BT show more matches of the big clubs instead of having showing equal number of games for all teams in the league? The only bullshit here is you thinking all 20 clubs are equal.
Losing money would not be a good thing. Clubs are already struggling as it is, and that's before COVID happened. Losing the most marketable clubs in the PL is the last thing needed to keep the EFL afloat.
