In the 1800's, a wealthy land owner decided to make what was a sleepy fishing port into a major terminus for trains connecting to ferries to Scotland and Ireland. Great care was taken in planning an attractive new town, only for the railways to bypass Fleetwood on their way north. The town's most notable employer today is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, manufacturer of the lozenge Fisherman's Friend. Fleetwood is the only town in the United Kingdom to possess three lighthouses. The Pharos is the only functioning lighthouse in the United Kingdom built in the middle of the street. Fleetwood took off as a fishing port when James Marr (Hull links Marr Shipping) brought a fleet of steam trawlers to Fleetwood and actively started to change the port by selectively fishing for hake. Fleetwood is the only town in Britain with trams running the full length of its main street. It is home to the last new seaside pier to be built in the United Kingdom. In October 1927, 90% of the area of the town was under water due to flooding. Jamie Vardy scored 31 goals for Fleetwood for the 2011/12 season. The first fully automated telephone exchange in Britain was put into operation to serve the town on 15 July 1922. Fleetwood has had several football clubs over its history. The current version of the club, dating from 1997, is now known as Fleetwood Town F.C. and is nicknamed the Fishermen, and its followers the Cod Army. The club has played in the Football League since 2012. In August 2014, Nathan Pond, played in his seventh different division for the club, an achievement officially recognised by Guinness as a world record under the title of ‘the most football (soccer) divisions played in for one club by an individual.’ With a population of under 26,000, Fleetwood is the smallest town in England with a League club. A previous incarnation of Fleetwood Town F.C. enjoyed a brief history from 1977, reaching the final of the FA Vase in 1985, before being wound up because of financial difficulties in 1996. The same fate also befell the two previous town clubs. Fleetwood F.C. was founded in 1908 and wound up in 1976. Fleetwood Rangers, the town's first club, spent ten seasons in the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination from 1889 to 1899. Since 1939, home games have been played at Highbury Stadium. Speedway racing was staged at Highbury Stadium from 1948 to 1952, with Fleetwood Flyers riding in the Second Division of the National Speedway league. The Flyers started the 1948 season as Wigan RLFC but moved to Fleetwood after racing a few away fixtures billed as Wigan.
That dodgy stick of my lads better stay for the whole match.... looking forward to this, a few beers at my lads hoose, watching city on a telly the size of my downstairs toilet and an Indian curry, toilet may come in handy at half time...... what’s not to like... come on you tigers !!!!
Not sure about this one, I think a draw would be an acceptable result. They haven't won yet, but they seem to be improving and will be up for this one. Wilk's in up front, the rest as last week, unless Smallwood for Batty. Though probably Slater will be in for Batty anyhow.
I'll take a scruffy, battling one nil. This match has a feeling of the Hartlepool match of 2000 (ish) - we were top end of the table and they were bottom end but with a much better team than their league position. As it turned out, we went up there that night just as they decided to start playing, we got walloped three or four nowt; that freezing cold night in the NE was a real eye opener for our Reggae Boyz.
our hiccups were often 0-3. like it needed getting out of the system before normal service could be resumed.
The greatest album... ever... Second hand news... “won’t you lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff“... some of the best lyrics in music, in my humble opinion...
I guess this will be the first time we've played this lot. how many of the current 92 have we never played? Ps what became of the Barton twatting (allegedly) the former Barnsley manager case? Was it settled out of court?
In senior fixtures, six. Though we’ve played at least two of these in pre season friendlies: Stevenage Fleetwood Town Salford City AFC Wimbledon (about to be rectified) Forest Green Rovers Harrogate Town As well as the current grounds of the above six clubs, there are another seven current league grounds where City have never played A senior game: Brentford, Crawley Town, Colchester United, Morecambe, Shrewsbury Town, Newport County, Tottenham Hotspur.
