    Anyone trying it?

I didn’t actually realise it was stoptober until this afternoon. I made a random, impulsive decision to stop smoking/vaping yesterday morning. More borne out of laziness than anything else.

Not sure it was a good idea but now I think I’m too stubborn to admit defeat and determined to see it out at whatever cost. That and the fact that if I was ever serious about kicking the habit I would have to somehow survive day 1 again but next time with the knowledge of just how terrible it’s going to be.

I actually stopped ‘smoking’ several years ago when I moved on to vape, but my nicotine intake I think probably doubled with the vape because I could pretty much just sit there fiending it any place any time. But this is my first time attempting to wean off nicotine since I started when I was 11 years old, I can’t really remember a time without a smoke/vape.

So now I’m about 40 hours in to cold turkeying and feel like mecha Streisand.

    When does it get better?

It doesn’t, smoking is the tits. I quit a few years back, use a vape thing now but I’m only using that on an evening, so I don’t take it to work or out or anything. Just gradual lay-off over a year.
I think Cold Turkey makes it more difficult because of the withdrawal.

Well there’s no going back now. It’s either now or never I think. I actually don’t feel too bad today just feel like there’s a big emptiness somewhere in my chest as if I have no soul, my hair has started turning ginger too. But yesterday I was dizzy and feeling sick and restless and it was hell.

Little things aren’t so little though, like dropping half of my banana at lunch would usually be a mild disappointment, whereas today I could have been Stephen Paddock.

I chewed a golf tee, seemed to help me out. Keep your hands busy with something and you’ll be reet.

I've 'given up' 3 times now, first 2 for about a year each, current one about 6 years now so I think I might have cracked it! Cold turkey was all that ever worked for me, I couldn't hack the gradual cutdown method (same as I can't easily just have 1 pint) and I felt like a prat with the vaping stuff.

I think different methods just suit different people, one size doesn't fit all.

If I make it past the week I don’t think I’d be likely to ever start again. I’m generally quite pragmatic and having to experience this sense of loss again would be more than enough to put me off.

I have predominantly vaped for 5 or 6 years now but that’s not quitting, it’s just transferring a habit over to a different vehicle.

It’s kicking the nicotine addiction that counts, and thus gum and patches and stuff are a none starter as far as I’m concerned. It may have been prudent to think in advance and have some nicotine free vape juice handy though, rather than just pulling the plug and having to cope with breaking physical habits as well as the mental struggle from nicotine withdrawal.

Stopped about 14 years ago. Went from 30 a day to zero via cold turkey. Is really hard for about a month then starts to get easier (well it did for me). As said by Tentotwo, never had one since. I read the Allen Carr , Easy way to stop smoking book. Its not easy because its an addiction. Good luck!!!!!!!!

Giving up smoking is a **** for a while but eventually the cravings go and you no longer think about wanting a tab constantly.

I smoked from the age of 12 until about 10 years ago.

Now I have no desire to have a cigarette at all.

For me I tried and failed many times.

I'd be cig free for a few days or weeks then I'd have just the one, bummed off a mate.

Or I'd buy a packet 'for special occasions'.

Next thing I knew it was 11 o'clock on a Friday night and I have 5 left from a pack of 20 and what do you know, I was a smoker again.

Not sure why quitting worked the last time.

My Missus' asthma was getting worse so we quit together.

I got bored of going outside all the time.

I had a lung age test done and was surprised to find that my lung age was about 10 years below my actual age and thought 'take that Ernie and don't push your luck'.

Someone also described the effect of smoke in your lungs as like constantly rubbing your finger on a sore patch of skin so it never got a chance to heal and just made a worse and worse scar as time went by - and that stuck in my mind.

I also transferred the money saved in a savings account and watching that grow into a nice little nest egg was motivation too.

Anyway, good luck Bob. You'll always be **** but hopefully you'll soon be smoke free ****.

For me the nicotine addiction faded after a week or so, after that it was the habit that was the problem. Get down the garden and finish your shed, when you want to stop for a *** don't stop, or have a cup of tea instead.

Nowt wrong with the gum Bob, I stopped on 01/07/1998, the day England got knocked out of the World Cup - I figured I couldn’t be any more depressed so **** it - and I’ve never had one single day without a piece of gum in me gob. I even occasionally go to sleep with a piece in, and find out next morning as my lug is securely stuck to the pillow, doesn’t impress the Mrs at all, she has no sense of humour!

Had me heart attack 2 years last June and after a week in Castle Hill came out a non smoker. It's never bothered me since, no urges or owt like that. I've been a lucky one, especially after 50 years of smoking. It left me with Angina and Asthma as well so don't know if thats got owt to do with it. Oh yea, I haven't had alcohol since then either, what the **** am I alive for? <laugh>

p.s. Good luck Mr H and all others trying to quit.

I stopped 8 years ago after 30+ years of smoking.
I set a date for myself to stop, I was on nights that week and so on my last night shift that week I sparked a *** up whilst driving home and lobbed the pack of ***s with about 10 left in out of the car window. When I got home I put a nicotine patch on and went to bed, I haven't had or needed a cig since.
Good luck in your quest to beat addiction, it can be done if you really set your mind to it.
