The Hull to Zeebrugge ferry service is closing as the number of private cars using it has tailed off due to the Coronavirus. It has still been well used by freight traffic, but despite that P&O say it is loss making. Without this service is will put an additional strain on other ports which will be faced with all sorts of problems without this additional traffic.

It is easy to gloat about The Don testing positive to Covid-19 but I would not wish this disease on any old and very unhealthy man. He stands to really suffer. I wonder who his supporters will blame for this and what happens if he is incapacitated for the election.

Aiming for the sympathy vote? If it kills or incapacitates him for a while that leaves pence in charge for the time being... even more dangerous. Theocratic States of America: like Iran but a different book, expensive "health care" and "education".

I don't wish ill to anyone no matter who they are, but just maybe this will wake up those who followed his bad advice about keeping safe. As a leader of a nation he has a responsibility to look after the wellbeing of the citizens, not feed them with the notion that this is just a dose of the flu.

I can't actually say 'I wish him ill' either - I think as much about him as he does of me ie. nothing.

But if he recovers, it will doubtless be down to the best health care that money can buy. Which will pay into the hands of the Democrats - "Universal health care for all Americans, not just those who can afford it."

Which in turn could flow through to the UK and stymie Tory plans to completely privatise the NHS - even though they claim no such plans exist.

How do you know he even has it? Could just be a stunt.

On a different but Chump related point.

Yes, there is lots of migration to the USA from Latina America. But, before Chump there were NEVER migrant "caravans," low and behold JUST before the elections there another one starts:

Who knows - but apparently large numbers of White House staff are rumoiured to be infected as well. Trump is known to dislike signs of weakness in both himself and others, and being publicly hoiked off to hospital in a helicpoter definitely qualifies as one - so it may well be true.

On the other hand, it could simply be another ploy to attract sympathy votes - like the caravan of migrants from Central America is doubtless aimed at the 'redneck vote'. Or it could be a deflection from the revelation about Ivanka's $750,000 'consulting fees' which could be damaging to them both.

Had a chat tonight to my daughter who works in theatres in Oxford as well as doing her clinic in Aylesbury. Because of the virus the surgeon she works with doing head and neck operations currently has 140 patients waiting for treatment. The theatres are giving priority to cancer patients which obviously is right in some cases, but she horrified me just before I was about to tuck into my dinner when she told me about someone who has lost an eye because it wasn't treated sooner. All of the money spent on setting up the temporary hospitals was a bit of window dressing in her opinion as there was nowhere near enough staff to operate them. Another case that she picked up at her clinic this week was a lady who had a sudden unexplained total loss of hearing in one ear. Having done all the checks she could she called in the specialist who happened to be next door. One week on steroids and then another check up. If it hasn't improved surgery will be required to prevent permanent loss of hearing, and it will need to be done quickly.
This autumn and winter are going to put the medical staff and facilities under extreme pressure, and it is no good the government looking to get away with it on the cheap if they want to safeguard the health of people who do not make the headlines, but do have conditions that can be treated, improving their lives, or even in some cases saving them.

The French government has announced that all the bars in Paris must close as the number of infections in parts of the city have risen to 260 people per 100,000. With Manchester recording 496 cases per 100,000, Liverpool 456 and numbers above Paris in Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield one asks if the UK government is right to keep pubs open?

I think this from yesterday suggests that the UK government doesn't have a clue about the real situation -

Thanks to an 'IT glitch' the daily figures for England last week were all understated, so they just lumped a lot onto Sunday's total. So much for the 'world-beating' technology.

Boris Johnson was not able to say how many people did not get a prompt warning about the need to self-isolate because of last week’s positive cases data error, but a simple calculation based on how many cases there were, and the average number of close contracts reported by people referred to test and trace, suggests around 50,000 people were missed.

Unfortunately, I have direct experience of single-sided sudden hearing loss. As I was on a bike ride in France , I didn't think too much about it, until we got back home (6 weeks later - lovely ride) and then discovered I should have gone straight to A & E. as it is a medical emergency. Wish i'd known. Cel a vie. The steroid treatment works 50% of the time apparently. Far too late for me - it has to be pretty immediate. I hope the lady recovers. it's a considerable nuisance not having much clue where sounds are coming from. I wasn't told about any surgery - I just have direction-finding hearing aids (they sort of work nearly some times)..the specialist said there are 5 possible causes of this condition. Mine (most likely) was a small stroke in the nerves behind the eye. When I said I'd been unlucky, he said no not really - if the stroke had been in the nerves next to the ones damaged, I would have lost my sight in 1 eye (so I could become a referee). 1 possible cause is 'no known cause !' However, it doesn't hurt, and it's not going to kill me. ( Losing a hearing-aid isn't very clever, as they are expensive! What is truly annoying is that as they are designed to be inconspicuous, they are very easily lost permanently. Worse, face masks and hearing aids are truly incompatible.
I hope that has cheered everybody up !

I think that the operation she was talking about was for a cochlear implant. I have a problem if people are on the wrong side of me, so I was hauled into my daughters clinic to see what was the cause. "Did you ever have a knock on that ear" was the question after she had rammed her microscope into my ear, because you have a tiny piece of bone, but vital for good hearing, missing. As a goalkeeper it was more than likely, but I don't remember that far back. They can glue a bit back on seemingly, but it could take years before it rose far enough up the waiting list to actually happen. So meanwhile I continue to annoy the wife with what she is convinced is selective hearing.
