Having read through the last few posts, and being a youngster only in my mid/late thirties, I have little idea what you are talking about. Great you have such fond memories of your Berlin trip, it must have been amazing to be there at such a historic moment...just such a pity the Russians just got there first.
Superb. You've forced me to bring up my best Who memory again now Ninesy... . View attachment 163575 [/QUOTE] Old git
All depends really Col. I agree it may with our current choice of midfielders and that's where the problem lays. It's not so much the formation you play as to the standard of players you play in that formation. All formations (if played correctly) have their pros and cons but 9 times out of 10 the better players will win a game. Desire and passion can influence but generally, ability is the key. 2 wingers could quite easily force a team playing 3-5-2 to keep their wing backs pinned into a 5 at the back, in turn enabling our full backs to push higher. I just think we need to be more positive in our play. I've always preferred a 3 at the back with 2 defensive midfielders, covering all across the 3. Defend as a 5 and attack as a 5. Two natural wingers rather than wing backs. I would also like to be done with this passing out from the back, we are simply not good enough to do this.
We clearly have more incoming, so it will be interesting to see what type of player MW has prioritised. Looks like Adomah will sign on a free (winger). The lad Kelman (striker) is a youngster from Southend, who was left out of the team this weekend, is possible and unlikely to be expensive. Andre Green, winger and free agent, has been touted. Imagine this might only happen if BOS were to leave (with Adomah likely to sign). Jake Doyle-Hayes seems an outside possibility. Free agent young midfielder let go by Villains. Forward Chris Willock from Benfica (reported €1m) seems an outside bet due to fee. Any others? Seems a definite lack of creativeness in midfield is not being addressed. Maybe a loan player here would be good; above the skill level we could afford and tide us over until next season, if we can afford it then (with the lack of income over this season). Similarly with the full-back position. Wallace seems a squad player, not a starter. Manning, I agree with others, would be better forward (so sell or re-sign anddrop interest in one of the above wingers and get a decent full back in). Forwards? We have two now, so no need to rush in. However developing a decent youngster would be opportunistic. We could always add a flexible loan who could play behind, or with, the strikers, for a season. Continues to be interesting. I do still have concerns over MW’s abilities in building a solid and functional defensive line; and will continue to do so until we eliminate these soft/ridiculous errors. If necessary, bring in a defensive coach to specifically work with them. Derry would seem ideal, and has had some coaching and managerial experience in the past, and feels a players kind of coach.
We certainly seem to be looking at the right type/age of players which is good. Wallace goes missing and literally leaves us an unbalanced 3 at the back. Cameron just looks past it, often misplacing passes under no pressure, Amos looks like he isnt arsed at times, carroll could be useful but tends not to be, Chair is just simply not in form and that's our whole midfield.
Yep, I did mean with OUR midfield players mate. I'd certainly like to see Bonne feeding off Dykes. Also, I think we'd struggle to play Chair in a 4-4-2, although maybe not the end of the world?
I think with the players coming, we may have more flexibility to change things around if we are struggling in games. I was out for most of Saturday and only just back home, I cannot remember the last time we managed to get a last minute equaliser.. However Happy Days as it is nice to score them rather than concede them....
Leading on from my previous post about not being able to really get in to football right now due to it just not feeling ‘right’ without fans being there. One sport I’m really enjoying at the moment, and I think in a weird way benefits from being behind closed doors is boxing. Great to hear each punch land and without the distraction of the usual crowd noise and chanting, it just seems easier to follow the technique of the fighters involved. Adding to that you can hear the instructions and encouragement from the corners, it makes it a great watch.
Clives report here.... Think he said he was watching the game down the C&S with groups of fans crowded around iPads - what has the game come to
