Apart from the years Duffens_Briefs mentioned they spent 5 years in the top flight before WW1. If they had not been in the top flight we never would have been the biggest city never to have been there as Bristol is a lot larger place than Hull. Bristol have one thing right compared to Hull - they have 2 football clubs and 1 rugby club.
5u3y slipped own through the divisions in consecutive seasons to end up in dire financial straits and nearly went out of business. 8 players foregoing what they were due and tearing up their contracts saved them. The amounts involved seem almost comically small compared to nowadays. There is a plaque at Ashton Gate honouring them. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...money-save-club-ashton-gate-eight-coronavirus
Yes indeed. Strange place. I recall going to Ashton gate a couple of times with City, standing in a pub beer garden about a half a mile from the ground and looking out onto rolling countryside. Then later on business driving through Bristol and getting an appreciate of its size. Whilst Hull is not that smaller Bristol is larger by area and population.
His dad John was a good player, played for City juniors until getting a bad injury. If you look at my avatar John is third from the left front row.
Their waterside is a lot better than Hull's. Though having a large river running into the city instead of being by the side of an estuary helps. Though you have to ask if successive Hull councils would have made as much of a similar situation. Remember going there early 1970s when you had to travel overnight on the bus to get to far flung places. In those days a lot of people still worked on Saturday morning. We were sat in a cafe with people passing by and my mate said " don't they have ugly birds here?". He had a point, never seen so many attractive lasses walking by.
Bristol was built on the proceeds of slavery. Hull was built on the back of a lot of ****ing hard work, deep sea fishing and serving the Industrial North of England.
So? It was what you do with the money. And most of Bristol was built long after slavery ended. You could say a lot of Hull's wealth was based on the cruel, lingering murder of all those lovely whales. Madrid and Lisbon were built on the proceeds of slavery and decimating entire civilisations in South America. Still more attractive places.
It has everything to do with money. There was more money in slavery and the massive compo that followed then there was from a few gallons of blubber.
It has everything to do with how money is spent. Slavery 3nded a long time ago. It isn't funding all the more modern developments in Bristol. Not that too far in the distant past Hull was wealthier 5han Bristol, biggest fishing fleet in the world, 3 rd largest port in the country...
Simply there is more money in Bristol then there is Hull. Always has been and always will be. Haddock at 6p a fry was never as profitable as a negro slave who could be sold several times over and work for nothing. No comparison. Hull would possibly prosper if we could drag it as close to London and the SE as Bristol is and we had the transport links they have to the capital. We haven't even got a direct rail link to ****ing York.
Slavery ended a long time ago. Long before fish reached the dizzy heights of 6p after decimalisation. Irrelevant.
The argument is irrelevant if you think Hull has ever been more prosperous then Bristol. Its like comparing Bridlington to Blackpool. And the 6p mention was obviously meant to be 6d ( old money) but you probably knew that.
Well, if you read the history of the blitz it says the bomb damage in Hull was similar to Plymouth. Never noticed any remaining bomb damaged buildings when I was there though.
