My mate, who still lives in Anlaby, and used to work @ Joyland (honestly can't remember if it was only known as Brown's amusements when I was there), just sent me 2 copies of the following book: Arrived last week...My best man, who emigrated here in 1970 just before I did, also worked @ Brown's for a couple of summers with the two of us, so one copy is a Christmas present for him too. His kids & mine will be able to read into the backgrounds of the place their fathers keep banging on about at dinner parties where our reminiscences bore the **** out of 'em - of course none of 'em believe the stories we tell about our wild times in Brid way back when ! It was always Joyland. The other brother had the smaller arcade which ran through the block where M & S and Woolies were and was called Pleasureland. Like other families we can think of the dad built them up and the kids were not capable of running the business themselves.
It's good to see the business is still in existance however. P. & O. ferry situation may be the final nail for the Yorkshire Vegas-by-the-Sea mind.
It is nothing like it was. Promenade side is a cinema, cafe, small bowling alley and on the night a nightclub. The seafront side is called Treasure Island and is more like the old amusement arcade. Though there were never carpets back in the day like there are now. No hanging about spending no money allowed nowadays. No chatting up like there was either.
Okay decided to go a bit off topic (ha) but (first) songs that I heard that go me into bands etc... All praise John Peel programme back in the days
