Last time out Sunderland beat Peterborough and Charlton drew with Brighton U21s before winning the penalty shoot-out. Sunderland travel to the Valley to face Charlton Athletic in Skybet League One George Dobson remains suspended and Max Power is back in training, Gooch and Maguire had knocks but should be back in contention. Elliot Embleton did not play in the U23s defeat against Leeds in midweek and is unlikely to feature this weekend. Jack Diamond started for the U23s and scored from the penalty spot and should be in the squad. Charlton are back in league one after a brief taste of success in the Championship having been relegated on the last day of the season (my heart bleeds). The Addicks have lost Lyle Taylor and have had offers for Macauley Bonne. They have recently signed Ben Watson from Forest and Akin Famewo from Norwich, and have just signed Marcus Maddison. Phil Parkinson: “We are looking at all options (transfers). I would like one or two more additions, ideally pace hurts oppositions. We have Jack Diamond and Benji Kimpioka who has just signed today, so if we bring young players in they have to be better than our own players – that’s the key.” “Benji has been training in Sweden and is not far off but will need some games in the U23s. I want him to force his way into the first team, and if he fails to do that we will loan him out” “They (Charlton) have got good players, we know that they are another team that will probably be up there at the end. We have to capitalise on the lack of confidence that is around at the moment.” Lee Bowyer: “Ben didn’t have a save to make in open play and then we come away with nothing, some of the decisions were unbelievable.“ “We’re breaking on them and he’s stopping the play because one of them got hit in the nuts – that’s not a reason to stop the play!” “Are you kidding me – is that a rule?, some of the decisions that were made there today were laughable” “Putting all that aside we lost the game and need to be more ruthless. A lot of positives to take from this game” Prutton predicts: meh Match Appointments: Referee: ANDY DAVIES Assistant Referees: George Byrne and Carl Fitch-Jackson Fourth Official: Adrian Waters Team Line ups Sunderland: Burge, O’Nien, Willis, Wright, Flanagan, Hume, Scowen, Leadbitter, Diamond, Gooch, Graham Subs: Matthews, Xhemajli, McLaughlin, Maguire, Power, Grigg, O’Brien Injured: McGeady, Feeney Doubtful: Embleton, Maguire Suspended: Dobson Charlton Athletic: Amos, Purrington, Oshilaja, Famewo, Bonne, Washington, Pratley, Doughty, Oztuma, Levitt, Barker. Injured: tbc Betting Odds: Home 9/4 Away 23/20 Draw 11/5 My two pence: A great result against Peterborough from a game that we didn't play well but also one that we could easily have lost. I really hope that Parky gives Jack Diamond a chance and that he finally realises that Wyke is not the answer. I’m expecting Charlton to be in the top 6 this year so this will be another tough game. They don’t seem to be quite hitting it off just yet so this might be a good time to play them. At least there won’t be a penalty shoot-out. I’m going for a 2-1 away win. Another cracking thread mate, top marks. We seem to be suited to away games and I'm hoping Charlton are a bit hung ho ... ... this is where the likes of Gooch can take advantage. Another clean sheet and a goal early on to make us sweat for 85 minutes!
Tough game, especially if, you know who, gets any time on the pitch, I would take a draw, but would love to see another three points on the board. OaU
They will need to be quick tomorrow and the fitness of said players may mean they wont feature anyway It seems a good time to play them
Jonny Williams had a rocket from Lee Bowyer and was taken off in midweek That other bloke is probably not match fit after feasting on takeaways while playing on his PS4
I'm going for 2-0 to the Lads, I don't expect it, I'd just like an easy afternoon for a change. Ha'Way the Lads
Confident again Just have a feeling the team will click soon. In the mean time we look solid at the back and are grinding out results Going for a big 3-0 away win KTF
I'm relieved Parky is looking at getting some pace in the team, but hoping that Diamond gets some time on the pitch. I feel really confident about this game particularly after our victory playing badly against one of the better teams on saturday. We wouldn't have won that last season thats for sure. We have to be happy with our start and with the right signing or two along with Neil and diamond and hopefully Embleton getting fit we should have a good season
Solid 1-1 draw. Mad that Maddison can sign for a bankrupt club and this daft **** running our gaff can’t pay for him. If they finish above is this season, it will be on that. Mark my words.
Can't see us getting another clean sheet but can see anther win. 2-1 to the Lads just coz we never do things the easy way.
I'm not surprised Charlton changed their tune regarding Maddison. A bit of desperation, I suspect. I saw the first half of their match against Lincoln City. They looked very poor. No Jonny Williams or Jason Pierce. All they had was this diminutive guy dribbling all over the place. When he took the corners, on both sides, the corner flags towered over him. They couldn't defend Lincoln so they resorted to many chippy slide tackles. No resemblence whatsoever to the team that was near the top of the Championship a year ago. Watch out for Lincoln City though. No superstars, just a bunch of big, tall, fit, white guys in a hurry to pass the ball.
I think we've seen the blueprint at Oxford. Keep it watertight in the first half and then kick on in the second half. Team wise, Graham surely has to start for Wyke and does Power come in for Scowen, I think he will. If Maguire isn't fit it should be OBrien coming in for him. Another massive game but I fancy us.
Thanks RTB for the OP. It was interesting to read from your piece that Parky wants pace, yet he has not sold Wyke and bought Graham, methinks he speaks with forked tongue? He also effectively says forget the young un's, who have pace for now. I always hope for a win, but as last week, I doubt about our goal scoring ( a dodgy pen last week) and the goalkeeper does not fill me with confidence. I caanot stand the Charlton manager.. so let's hope for a 0-1
Burge Willis Wright Flanagan or Xhermajli O’Nien Leadbitter Scowen Hume Gooch or Maguire (whoever fittest) Graham Grigg for me
I think it will be much the same other than for Power in for Scowen. Up front it will be whoever the bottle spins to.
