I'm not even sure it's the defence. Aurier and Sanchez go out to deal with their attack down that side and nobody drops in to cover. Davies is caught between the man on the ball and the man out wide, while Alderweireld's got a couple of players to deal with. We outnumber them in that move, yet half the players aren't picking anyone up. No holding player = no cover.
He didn't seem to know what he was supposed to be doing against Southampton. Settled down in the second half, though.
I suppose Arsenal fans got excited by that wonder goal just the same as when Leicester scored for them. They have such a sheltered life poor souls!
Admit it, you missed these... please log in to view this image Main takeaways * Somebody somewhere doesn't realise nobody calls him "Tanguy Ndombele Alvaro" * A few positional snafus: Son drifting way too wide so he and Bergwijn were in the same space, while Dele dropping deep meant Lamela cutting inside to allow Aurier space meant the two were getting under one another's feet * Lo Celso being the most progressive dribbler is a bad sign, given he played half an hour * The obvious thing, which anyone watching the game also saw, is nobody wanted to take their man on, hence so many backwards passes from Bergwijn and Aurier while Ndombele and Lamela weren't carrying the ball forward * Once again, Aurier is the Bermuda Triangle where possession goes in, but only Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez ever saw it again * Oh look, progressive passing from Harry Winks to Ndombele, Lamela and Aurier. I'm sure that'll be mentioned somewhere... * On the subject of Winks, the fact that he was a regular out ball for Toby and Aurier is important, considering how often last season our defence simply didn't have one which left Harry Kane isolated up front with a dot about as large as Hart's is here. That's what Winks offers the team, the problem is that you need a pass map to realise it * The big circles for Winks and Ndombele, and the reasonably-sized circle for Davies, showed we have more players making themselves available for passes so we could move the ball quicker * Toby finding Bergwijn directly a few times is definitely the sort of thing we want to see if we are going to play on the counter * Toby being most central was also an issue, as we needed a spearhead and neither Son nor Dele were doing that
