For his first two seasons, Inter played a 4231 where slotted played alongside either Joao Miranda in 2017-18 or Stefan De Vrij in 2018-19 and was regarded as one of the best non-Juve CBs in Serie A

And then Antonio Conte happened

As soon as he got his feet under the desk, Conte installed his usual 352 system with no consideration of the players he has available, and while that would make sense if he had players who can slot into that system when you put the system first and players second you run the risk of accentuating weaknesses and hiding strengths - which is the exact opposite of what a system should do

And the thing is that Skriniar isn't the only player who has been affected by Conte putting system before players, as Diego Godin has really suffered in this system to the point he was rumoured with a January departure, Christian Eriksen is similarly linked with a departure this window in spite arriving in January, while Marcelo Brozovic seems to be angling to leave - and if they played 4231 this wouldn't be the case

Honestly it's not just here: his name gets thrown like a rock by the Twitter and Reddit crowds every time we haven't signed anyone within ten minutes of a transfer window opening

 

I note there are several players around whose name is Dembele.

Perhaps in a similar vein in the future there will be talent around
whose surnames are "Somebody" ...

LB is one of the places we don't need to strengthen (could but don't NEED). CB, RWF and maybe a striker yes but LB would just be a wste of money that could have a much better impact elsewhere.
