Best (and one might suggest the most realistic) satirical comedy series ever produced for TV. Loved it. Except for maybe PM's Question Time ?
The programme responsible for young men walking down the street and whipping out a comb to rearrange their hair Cookie style in the reflection in a shop window.
It was aired at that time (18:05 in new money) ? Did Mary Whitehouse have owt to do with it perchance? Where was David Jacobs when he was needed ? Juke Box Jury had Bill Murray rearranging his hair all the time on the latter.
No. It was because the BBC used to shut down between 6 and 7 so parents could get their kids to bed (how times have changed) and this was the first programme to go out after 6 when the rules were relaxed. It seems a different world back then. Of course 6 5 special opened the doors for decent pop music programmes which followed like Oh Boy! with acts young people actually wanted to see.
I'd hazard a guess Mary Whitehouse was involved one way or another in lobbying for the 6-7 blackout. She was a longtime thorn in the side of the BBC. ( and many other institutions also).
That was about 4 or 5 years before Mary Whitehose embarked on her crusade. In fact she was a figure of vilification in some quarters in the 1950s as she espoused sex education in her career as a teacher.
