Pardon my ignorance but what is Northern Soul? Is it one style of music and if so which one, there's been so many different styles played on this thread?
Is it the clothes, the dodgy dancing, I've genuinely never seen it before. I knew most of the songs featured, especially the Motown stuff. Did Northern Soul have its own sound which then adopted American Black music or was it always just a mixture of popular music and Soul music?

My take is that it was more the independent labels but I’m sure I’m wrong.

    From the Wiki page,

In the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: the history of the DJ, the authors describe northern soul as "a genre built from failures", stating: "... Northern Soul was the music made by hundreds of singers and bands who were copying the Detroit sound of Motown pop. Most of the records were complete failures in their own time and place ... but in Northern England from the end of the 1960s through to its heyday in the middle 1970s, were exhumed and exalted."[42]

That makes sense, the music posted by Roger early in the thread fitted into the category described above and then other posters started posting more mainstream soul music. That's why I asked the question.

    Thanks for the link Montysoptician.

When I first started listening to it a mate told me, cause I asked the same question that it was the songs that didn’t quite make it for the soul music scene in America. Some bright sparks from Wigan listened to some tracks that never made it big and thrust them on to us over here where we all realised how good they were and the yanks were stupid by not rating them. This is a disclaimer though as I don’t know if my mate was telling the truth.

I'm alright. Still battling the Enemy in me head but people don't feel the wrath now.
