I went to Spurs 1 Villa 2, Spurs 0 Hull 1 and Spurs 0 Wigan O at the beginning of the 08-09 season. I honestly never thought I would ever see a game massively worse than those...how wrong I was! I am off to wash my eyes with bleach in the hope I can unsee that ****efest
I wasn’t expecting anything from today’s game, as I said yesterday, as I felt it’d come too soon for our new signings and we rarely get anything at the Lane, so I’m absolutely delighted with that performance and result. I didn’t understand Jose’s subs and tactical changes and you created nothing of note 2nd half. I don’t get Hjobjerg and I was chuffed when he turned us down in favour of Spurs and I’ll defo take Allan over him like. Funny old game.
I think Levy now more than ever needs to pull off the Bale deal. I don't care how he gets the finances to do it but this team in general is not good enough, there's too many that aren't at the required level we need them to be at and therefore we need a superstar to pull us through matches. Just looking at that XI today: Hugo - Not as good as prime Hugo but good enough. Davies - the guy who'll always give you a 6 out of 10. In a good team that'd be fine because you need those types, in a bad team, like this, it worsens things. Dier - miles off of the level we need when looking at how good Vertonghen was. Toby - nowhere near the player he was two years ago, nowhere near. Doherty - TBC Hojbjerg - TBC Winks - worst player I've seen get a regular run of games at Spurs in the last 10-15 years. As a player, I ****ing hate him, though you all know that, lol. Lucas - living off of a heroic semi final display. Extremely inconsistent and shouldn't be playing over Bergwijn. Son - Inconsistent. Brilliant in spells, anonymous in others. Always find it surprising when some pundits or rival fans say he's our best player/ better than Kane, because he really isn't. Dele - living off of his form from 3 years ago. If anyone offers £30m-£40m we should snap their hands off, he's not going to get any better and he peaked too early. Kane - the only world class player we have but if he doesn't get the service it's pointless. We need that game changer and Bale is the only one we have a chance of getting due to his situation at Madrid, all the others are happy at their respective clubs and wouldn't look at joining us.
You dicked us bro, the only thing you should be disappointed at is that you only scored one. None of us understood what Jose done today. As for Hojbjerg, far too early to judge though I'm pretty sure it was you and Libby I was saying to on the Prem board a few weeks back that I had my doubts. In his defence, when partnered alongside captain crab it's hard to shine. Alongside a more creative player I'd like to think he'll be able to adapt to the role Jose wants as in theory we'd control possession a lot more with someone who worries the opposition, rival teams see Winks and lick their lips knowing he's only gonna pass it backwards or to the side.
I didn't think your first-half display was that bad. Everton probably shaded it and looked sharper, but you looked threatening on the counter and created some chances of your own. No idea what happened second-half, though. Looked miles off the pace. Players weren't running about, hassling Everton or putting them under pressure. They had acres of space and time in midfield. And even when you did try to get at them through the middle, they kept intercepting or broke up play to disrupt any momentum you tried to gather. Hojbjerg was outshone by Allan and Doucoure. Doherty was blowing out his arse after about 50 minutes. Didn't look convincing 1v1 against Richarlison (who was insanely wasteful) and didn't track runners in the second 45. Jose should have reacted a bit quicker here because it was obvious Everton were targeting him as a weak link. Some of your players evidently aren't fully fit. However, the tactical tweaks by Mourinho didn't really make much sense. Also, Lucas and Alli seem to contribute virtually nothing to your team these days. As said by DH, the former is living off the CL semi-final heroics 18 months ago and Alli hasn't hit consistent form for several years now. You need a shake-up. Urgently.
@Dier Hard There is no way Bale will join us. We are not 1 player off being a top four team. Like you said, we have players who are living off performances from 2 or 3 years ago still starting games. Dele; has not played consistently well since the 2017-18 season. Dier: has not played consistently well since 2016-17 season. Alderweireld; has not played consistently well since late 2018. Moura has been a shell of a player since he was dropped for the CL final. Sissoko, Davies and Winks are not top four starting players...they are squad players. We need a rebuild of two CDs, a holding midfielderand probably 2 full backs. Bale will not come to play for a midtable team and unfortunately that is what we currently look like. United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Leicester, Wolves and Everton have better balanced squads than us and appear to have a long term plan that they are following.
I’m disappointed but tbh my expectations this season are very low so I’m not overly upset. I’d love to know what the club’s targets are this season because if it is top 4 then they need sectioning because the squad is absolute miles off from that. Even if they panic and sign 2-3 players (which they won’t) I can’t genuinely see Spurs troubling the European places this time around.
Everything you say is correct. We all knew this though, I thought everyone was happy to be supporting a Spurs side that is aiming for a top half finish and hopefully a cup run so not sure why everyone is so angry
Tbh...our football under him was pretty poor for all of 2019 apart from the CL run. Can't see that happening and in all honesty hope it doesn't.
We need more quality for sure - If we could convince a couple of teams that Winks and Dele are both worth £30m then we might in a position to strengthen. But both are HG and so will need replacing with home grown that lad at Villa would be a good swap for one of them!
I could name 4 of the starting 11 today, that should not even be playing in the Prem., let alone in a Spurs shirt.
Bring back Poch and play football with a smile not a scowl. Mourinho is not Spurs. No better than George Graham and we won a cup with him.
We don't have to be top four, we need to be top six and ideally get top four - plus a trophy. Bale showed under AVB that he could carry a bunch of dross and whilst he may be a good few years older, he can still do it with faith from his manager. If you have Bale alongside Son and Kane up top in a three, that alone will get you enough results over the course of the season providing we have Lo Celso fit enough most of the time. Levy needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat to get it done, it could prove absolutely pivotal to how this season unfolds. I agree with your assessments of the players, I more or less said the same, although Winks, Sissoko and Dele should be sold, not kept as squad players.
Didn't mean I would keep them...I think we have paid the price for keeping players too long. Successful clubs tend to ship players out and replace them to keep things fresh and to keep players in their toes. I said at the time, that we should never have given Alderweireld the new contract. I would accept offers for Dier, Alderweireld, Davies, Dele Winks and Sissoko. None of them showed any reason they should be in the team today...and that has become a common occurrence. I think that the team, Jose, Levy and Enic are fortunate that fans are not allowed to go to games cos the atmosphere will become poisonous.
It was a bit tongue in cheek. However, we should have stuck with him, even if we had ended up finishing 10th. Jose may have got us Europa but his is not the right man for Spurs long term. Short term appointment with the potential for instability for years ahead. His rebuild is not going to work and we’ll are going to spend the next few years battling just to get into top 6-8. The difference with Poch is the ethos, fit, culture, history, style of play, affinity was just a great match with our club. I would have preferred a season or two below the average but for this guy to have done the rebuild again. It would have meant battling for top 4 for the next decade after the blip. It ended up being a change for what. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. There isn’t any one better for us. Guess it doesn’t really matter now. But for long term success you need consistency, trust and backing for the long term. Given the resources of City, Utd, Chelsea and Pools current dominance, maybe we are where we are and Top 4 was always punching. However I want to see some good ****ing football too!
Simple question: what was the point of our pre-season? A fair number of the players who started today didn't even feature due to being on holiday/self-isolating, and it really showed with some of the players today Obviously most of the blame for that goes on Sky/BT because they desperately need people to subscribe to their premium sports channels and only Premier League football does that, but ****ing hell do clubs need to remind these vultures that they need football just as much as football needs them sometimes
I definitely agree with that, we've kept players for far too long. I think I was the most vocal on here about being anti-Toby contract and I stand by it too, I said at the time we'd "Ozil'd" ourselves, because he was flirting with leaving and then somehow blagged himself a huge new deal, which is exactly what Ozil done. I said at the start of the window/ end of last season that if I could treat the summer like a Football Manager game there'd only be about 7 or so players I'd keep at this club. As I've also said before, the failure to add to the team in 18/19 will still continue to haunt us because we're forever playing catchup. The atmosphere would be horrendous, I don't like it at the new stadium anyway but I'm pretty happy that I don't have to go to games at the moment.
