Could we come up with a decent City Rejects XI? It needs to be players who eventually went on to better things but left on a free transfer or if they went for a fee first went to a club lower down the league. Keith Andrews and Deano would surely get in.
I'm not sure Deano qualifies does he? He was hardly a 'reject' first time around - sold to the Scotts Premier League for quite a bit of money (ã750k from memory) and second time he left to go in goal for Oldham while on loan
Not sure about 'better things' but the following both did pretty well after leaving the club Aaron Wilbraham (banged them in for MK Dons but seems to have gone **** again) Ian Goodison (legend amongst Tranmere fans)
It depends which way you look at it. He was let go and went to North Ferriby. That's definitely a downward step. So he was rejected by City, but then he came back.
not really a "reject" but Payton was an apprentice at City.. went on to Celtic later before becoming very popular back in his native Burnley..
Stuart Pearce, had a trial with City then went back to play for Wealdstone United before moving to Coventry - probably the best reject in all honesty!
How about Gavin Gordon? Left us to go to Lincoln City for ã30K and then on to Cardiff for about 20X that. Although maybe Lincoln was a step up at the time.
both Parker & Marwood definitely went on to better things, but we got pretty good fees for them didn't we? Parker came from Luton who were Div 1 back then whilst we were in Div 2.
