Highly recommend this program - I've put it up before, but seems more relevant now with what my wife is going through. One of the brothers is really suffering with long-haul Covid, and even had to have his heart jump-started to get it back into normal rhythm

I’m willing to stake money in the fact that the vast majority will recover without any long term effects. But of course that’s my opinion that cannot be proved or disproved......and certainly can’t be for many years to come.
As you say, it will be interesting to find out in years to come

Another day passes and still unable to get a test booked for the mother in law!! Absolute shambles! In other news, my brothers school have been allocated 5 test kits....yes a whole 5, for a school of 1700 pupils. All got used in the first 2 days!

I guess that's the thing, there are so many vagaries with the symptoms people get or don't get, the severity of the symptoms they do get and their longevity and whether or not they repeat. I'll worry less if hospital admissions and deaths remain low but it looks like hospitalizations are creeping up.

Are they ? I really didn’t know that. If so you are right then on the face of it that could be of concern.....however the fact remains that deaths are low.
But as we keep saying....who knows what the future holds

Small-ish sample but some evidence a lot of folk still needing care months after infection.

I saw somewhere that they had doubled in the last week.

There were 9 deaths yesterday. Talk of numbers doubling can be misleading when it's from a very low base. There are no signs yet of hospitalisations and deaths increasing dramatically. No certainty that it won't happen of course.

You see this is the problem.....we have so many reports from different sides of the spectrum. Some saying it’s getting worse, some saying it’s not. Gets very confusing and difficult to make an informed decision.

I’ve been quite open that I don’t think there will be a second wave and we are using draconian measures against what we are facing.....my crewmate is the opposite and says it’s all needed and we are on the brink of a ‘second wave’......so even we can’t agree. Therefore it’s a matter for us anyway, to treat what we see and take it from there...after all we don’t make the policy or change the direction those in charge are taking.

Care home coronavirus cases ‘quadruple in a month’ as second wave fears grow

Concern is rising over a spike in coronavirus cases in UK care homes, as fears grow that the country could be seeing the beginning of a second wave. Cases in the care sector have reportedly quadrupled since the start of the month, with outbreaks detected in 43 homes – months after Covid-19 ravaged the sector and left thousands of elderly residents dead. An estimated 1,100 cases are being reported each day. The Government has alerted care providers in an effort to highlight the rising rates and call for action. In a letter, sent on Friday, care bosses are urged to ‘take the necessary action to prevent and limit outbreaks’, pointing out that in the last three days there had been an increase in notifications of coronavirus cases in care homes.

See this makes my point exactly mate....second wave or spike ? Reports of ?
Workforce affected ?The article is all very emotive and sensational but not much substance.
It mostly seems to be assumption, opinions and possibilities.

So when does a spike become a wave?

The UK is currently at over 3,000 new cases per day, and rising, the highest figures since May. Up here, we're over 200 cases a day, highest since May. Yes, we are testing more which increases the numbers, but it's still rife. According to the ONS, 1 in every 1,400 of us is infected (an increase on the 1 in 2,000 from the previous week). The deaths may be dropping off, for now, but we've no idea on the long term effects this will have on our population, especially the younger elements. And the more people that catch this, the more likely they are to infect someone who is vulnerable - Don't Kill Grandma!!

Again....as you say the increase in testing will effect figures, who knows how many had it early on when just hospital admissions were tested, therefore any comparison is pointless....the fact is we don’t know.
As Col says...we are just going round in circles.
My opinions have not yet changed

It's a little simplistic to keep saying that, as we're not yet at the levels of May and June you don't think there's a problem.
Hopefully things won't get much worse and you and some others are proved correct.
However, the fact that France, Spain and Italy have seen big spikes in infections and now we, who are generally a couple of weeks behind, are showing worrying upward trends is a cause for concern?

Hopefully I will be Col, and the beauty of it is that who knows whether I’m right or not....certainly not you and definitely not me.
I have but opinions, as do we all.

To be honest mate, even if you do get tested then there is meant to be a backlog of 185,000 swabs to be processed with 1 in 4 waiting over 48 hours for their results. Many are being sent to Germany etc to be processed and many more are being lost or destroyed.
Yeah the governments response to this is great.

So you don't think there's any cause for concern considering the reported increases in Europe and now here?
