Season starts today and no striker signed. Why oh why do Spurs always go into the season without a ‘complete’ squad, points at the start of a season are just as important as points at the end. Look how Willian and Callum Wilson have already proved vital for their new clubs.
You're comparing us signing a backup striker to Newcastle signing Callum Wilson as a starter, and this is the issue Have we got a complete starting xi? Yes...I think, which is why we got Hojbjerg and Doherty sorted PDQ, as it has to be said we didn't start last season with a complete starting xi due to the lack of a DM and a hell of a lot of questions about the RB spot Have we got a complete squad? No...but neither do Newcastle, since their midfield was often easily overrun last season and they haven't addressed that at all, something which won't be exposed when swatting aside a team as toothless as West Scam are in 36 out of 38 games this coming season (guess who the other two are against?) but if you put them against a team from midtable or above it will be exposed pretty quickly
Spurs need a striker, yes will more likely play second fiddle to Kane but that doesn’t mean the need for one isn’t great. Llorente left over a year ago and hasn’t been replaced, how can that happen for a top level team that claim to have aspirations of competing alongside the very best.
One day somebody will explain the collective amnesia that people seem to have about one thing: Son can play up front Do we need somebody to fill in for Harry Kane in low priority games/games we're coasting in by the 75th minute? Yes Do we have no players who are capable of playing up front other than Harry Kane? No Obviously there's the issue that Kane and Son both start games in their respective positions, but the fact that the DGCs of the world were prattling on about selling Kane and playing Son up top a couple of seasons ago underline the fact that it's not Kane or Nobody up front - but people have convinced themselves this is the case for some bizarre reason
Son being able to play up front is by the by really. Moura can too but neither help us much. They’re too easily nullified by teams who will just sit deep and not give them space to run into. A natural striker with a more physical presence and more intuitive movement in central areas will allow the wide players and attacking midfielders to play off the 9, hopefully creating space even against a team camped outside their own penalty area. I think you know this as well as I do. When Kane is out teams know they can sit deep and counter because Son and Moura only offer a threat up front if we catch a team in the press, outside of one of them producing a moment of magic.
Do you know for sure though that Arsenal and Newcastle have complete squads? Plus, Wilson and Willian are first XI signings for their clubs, comparing them to our lack of a squad player is pretty unfair. Wilson needs to be compared to Kane and Willian to one of Son/ Bergwijn/ Lucas. Or alternatively, somehow compare them to Doherty and Hojbjerg who I’m presuming are here to be our first XI signings.
Pierre Emile-Højbjerg has not missed a game through injury or illness dating back to March 2015. [Transfermarkt]
From Sky: EARLY TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS Tottenham will include summer signings Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Hart in their squad to face Everton. Giovani Lo Celso is a doubt having missed all of pre-season with an injury that bugged him at the back end of last season. Harry Winks should be available after he was forced to pull out of last week's England squad.
