Is it popular to hate Southgate again now even after he’s managed to take the international equivalent of Newcastle and make us competitive for the first time in a quarter of a century?
I like the fact he experiments a bit with new players. But there’s some that played tonight that I don’t think should be anywhere near an England shirt.
The formation was just... I don't know how to even describe how little sense it made, especially after the way we played against Iceland. 3-4-3 with no left sided players on the left and no creative midfielder? Seriously, what the **** is that? And then, when he brings on creative midfielders in Mount and Grealish - shock horror - we looked a bit better going forward. Then he brings on Maitland-Niles late on, a man who has been playing LWB on the regular for Arsenal and... plays him at RB and keeps Trippier on the left. What? Stats said that Grealish created more chances than the rest of the England midfielders and attackers combined. He came on after 75 minutes. Put it this way - if City played like that, fans on here would be pissed. End of.
I thought that was strange substitution. I only watched the last 25 minutes - did Trippier get that black eye during the game? When I started watching his eye looked like it was closing. Should definitely have subbed Trippier for Niles.
