In today's PC offended culture they risked a "They think we all look the same " type response.

Pretty sure Max and Jamal are much better than that sort of nonsense.

Mike Bailey's latest: "Does now sound like the initial fee is just shy of £14m - with the potential for significant add-ons. Norwich also have a sell-on clause. Deal has been accepted, I believe."

According to the Pinkun no bid has been accepted and negotiations are ongoing. I'd be surprised if SW accepted the first offer just like that. Newcastle don't have any fit LB so they're keen to conclude the deal, but SW still has room to negotiate. I think it will happen, but we have no need to be rushed.

"The clubs are in discussion but no bid has been accepted by Norwich at this stage, although the expectation is agreement can be reached in the coming days. Those potential add-ons, reported to become activated should the player hit a series of performance related targets, are expected to take the deal closer to City’s valuation than Premier League champions Liverpool managed when they saw an £8m plus £2m in add-ons offer rejected last month. The Athletic’s report also claims that City have negotiated a sell-on clause into the deal - meaning they stand to profit further should Lewis kick-on at St James’ Park."

Yes - details are in the Pinkun now:

"City’s sporting director Stuart Webber held lengthy talks with the Magpies on Friday following an initial approach for the left back to discuss a potential £15m deal with a series of add ons. Newcastle have now met City’s valuation for a player who came through their academy after joining from Luton Town."

It would seem that our 'price' for our young stars has now dropped from £20m to £15m, including add ons.

Depends how you look at it, the nature of the add ons and there value. I don't think the club every said 20m up front, but I could be wrong

Agree sad to see Lewis go and I don't doubt he'll go on to bigger and better things, unlike the Murphy's. Whilst I think Lewis has potential to be much better than Byram I'm far from convinced that he is at the moment. I thought last season we looked stronger when Byram played instead of Lewis, if only he could stay fit.

The up front (though of course staggered) money seems to be around £13.5-13.75m with the add ons taking that to a potential £15m. While I think that's reasonable for Lewis, I'd hate to see Godfrey, Aarons or Cantwell go for that. I also wonder whether Luton has a sell on agreement which will reduce the total we get. I agree with you about Byram, but with him injured, we now depend on Quintilla and McCallum at LB. Xavi looked good in pre-season though, so let's hope he comes good now.

I hope you're right Canario, but it depends on the phrase "£15m deal with a series of add ons". It could mean 'including' or 'as well as' the add ons. I'd feel much better about it if your reading is right.

Does nobody else think that 15m is a good price? I think it's really good for actually our second-choice left-back (OK, our first choice is made of glass, but still...)

He has potential, don't get me wrong, and could make Newcastle a lot of money. But I think this really is passing the risk that he doesn't meet potential to Newcastle and in the circumstances is not selling the family silver. Look at Jacob Murphy - he still might come good, but that sale looks like decent business from us now.

I'm relatively content with the price. £14-15m probably goes a long way to covering the transfer outlays we've had this summer, and we still have Byram, Quintilla and McCallum as LB options. Michael Bailey reports the deal also includes "significant add-ons", and a sell-on clause. If Lewis does go on to be a £40m player, we could potentially end up making £25-30m from this deal.

If we had to lose anybody this summer, Lewis is probably the easiest to let go. We already have ample cover, and whilst we ask a lot of our full-backs, it's fundamentally all coachable and fitness. We're not losing the mercurial brilliance of Buendia or Cantwell just yet.

We as fans didn't complain last season when we spent very little on new players and kept most of the TV revenue back .
Selling Lewis has paid for most of the new signings and we have to cut our cloth accordingly.
I was gutted when we sold Sutton , Ward , Eadie and Maddison but Lewis was not vital to our title winning side and hopefully Quintilla will be even better.

If Aarons Godfrey Cantwell or Buendia get sold then that would not go down well with the loyal fans.

One thing was exposed egainst Luton and that is the lack of quality in goal.
McGovern as back up and Barden 3rd choice is a bit risky if Tim gets suspenjured.
We don't want to shell out millions on a new keeper who may not get a game but Barden needs a loan to get experience, he's not ready yet for me.

    He's a centre back ?

If we sign him then Godfrey will probably move

If this lad is on our radar then we could have potentially 6 CB in Gibson, Zimmerman, Klose, Hanley, Godfrey and Mbe Soh. Assuming Godfrey goes then we could have five. My gut feeling is that Gibson and Mbe Soh would be the first choice if this lad comes to CR. The other three are prone to injury and have not covered themselves in glory in both the Championship or PL.
