Pretty much, but from open play we looked more solid at the back. You can see why we were so easily carved apart at a higher level, we don't play with any tempo at all and we're lucky if we can string more than three passes together.

We didn't bother much with overlaps, but when we did try it they came off and we got balls into the box. If we stop just hoofing it forward to the CF, we'd probably stand a better chance of keeping the ball.

We'll face much worse teams than Sunderland this season, but without a less direct approach, I'm not optimistic we'll get anywhere of note.

I think we looked better at the back, but going forward, nothing changed.

All got to be pleased with any win, the forward line needs much more movement and aggression, Samuelson is 6ft but gets pushed over far to easy and is to weak, yes On a good day I can imagine him going past players easy but what I've seen of him then he's got to do a lot more. Eaves at this level did well last time out but again has to do a lot more, didn't hold the ball up well enough and has we all know the ball bounces off him. Wilks should be good at this level and got involved the longer the game went on but not enough from him. Young Potter we know he turns well and hopefully will become very good but at the moment for me the jury's out, he's still lightweight and today on a run away played a terrible pass to Wilks which would have and should have put him through on goal. A new Centre forward badly needed hopefully bringing a lot more movement to the forward line, if we get that and Scott is good at this level with Wilks alongside then I think we would have a decent chance but at the moment the forward line out today isn't good enough. Other than them moans it's nice to think we hung on in there matched them second half and got the win for a change.

McCann doesn't deny there was an altercation between George Long and Wilks though.

You get a full written press release now

    https://www.hullcitytigers.com/post-match-reaction-grant-mccann/

We were against a side that is used to winning and probably would have finished in the play-offs had last season continued,” said McCann.

“It was a tough game and I thought we showed a good temperament in the first half to not concede when Sunderland were on top of us. We defended well although we rode our luck at times.

“The second half started off a bit cagey but I thought our fitness levels showed in the last 15 or 20 minutes and we looked like the team that was going to go on and win it towards the end.

“I was pleased with the penalties. The boys showed good composure to score five out of five. It was a good days’ work for us. We weren’t at our best but we showed a different side to us, one that we maybe didn’t show enough of last season. The togetherness was there to get that clean sheet.

“We want to change that losing habit that we had into a winning one and we’ve started well today.”

McCann confirmed after the game that Tom Eaves departed the action with an ankle injury during the first half that will need assessing.

I said a football tourist. Which means I’ll go to a variety of games. Mostly non league as they are more deserving of a financial contribution from me than the Allams are at present.
