Another way to look at it is where our successful players of the past decade in each position were signed from CF: Premier League (Keane, Defoe, Crouch), Bundesliga (Berbatov) AM: La Liga (van der Vaart), Eredivisie (Eriksen), League One (Dele), La Liga (Lo Celso) Wingers: Championship (Bale), Bundesliga (Son), Eredivisie (Bergwijn), Ligue 1 (Lucas), Serie A (Lamela)* CM: Prva HNL (Modric), Premier League (Dembele), Championship (Huddlestone) DM: Premier League (Palacios, Parker, Wanyama), Brazilian Serie A (Sandro), Primeira Liga (Dier) CB: Eredivisie (Vertonghen, Sanchez), Premier League via La Liga (Alderweireld), Premier League (Woodgate, Kaboul), FB: Premier League (Corluka, Davies, Trippier), Championship (Walker, Rose), Ligue 1 (Assou Ekotto) GK: Ligue 1 (Lloris), Premier League (Gazzaniga) Now compare that to the failures CF: Eredivisie (Janssen), La Liga (Soldado) AM: Bundesliga (Holtby) Wingers: Ligue 1 (N'Jie, N'Koudou), Premier League (Bentley, Pienaar), La Liga (Dos Santos) CM: Brazilian Serie A (Paulinho) DM: Ligue 1 (Zokora, Stambouli, Capoue) CB: La Liga (Fazio), Liga I (Chiriches) FB: Ligue 1 (Aurier), SPL (Hutton), Premier League (Naughton), Jupiler League (Fryers) GK: N/A ...so my first thought is maybe pass on Soumare and Sangare
You’ve gone back a bit further than a decade on a good few of those! Which is actually quite scary though when you think how time has gone. Just the other day I saw on Twitter it’d been a decade since we signed van der Vaart, a bloody decade! I’d say Zokora was fairly successful too, to be honest, no where near as good a DM as some of our more recents but I felt he was pretty instrumental in that Jol era to begin the journey back into European spots.
I think we’ll bring in a striker regardless. We’re probably just sending out signals that we’re needing to sell to buy to ensure we don’t get bent over. We more than anyone have been hit hardest by covid due to having to pay off a stadium (that hasn’t been able to pay for itself the last 6 months) so I can sympathise this year with the club about needing to be cautious but in general I do think we’ll still bring in one or two more. Arsenal somewhat done this last summer then ended up splashing a club record on the expensive Bolasie. They gave the impression they were absolutely skint due to making a loss but then all of a sudden Pépé for £72m was being bandied about. Not saying we’ll spend a huge amount but I think cash is there to bring one or two in.
Wenger in the early days definitely, and IMHO to about 2009, was more ITK about the mainland Europe and French-speaking nations. After that, Euro leagues as a whole became more aware of the same talent pool, and in the PL the Sugga Daddy FCs could outbid him.
Carrick was far more instrumental in Jol's early success. In comparison, Zokora's early days involved him missing a month due to contracting malaria on holiday, and the speed that The Honest and Humble Saint Harris of Redknapp replaced him with Palacios (and the immediate stiffening of our midfield) made it clear he was a dud ...also that we sold him in 2009, but for some reason I thought his time at the club ticked over into 2010 Not really, as the rest of the list would be youth teamers (Kane, Bentaleb, Mason, Winks, KWP, Townsend, Caulker) or an opinion can't be formed due to them never playing (Pau Lopez, Stipe Pletikosa, Iago Falque, Cristian Ceballos, Bongani Khumalo) It also has to be said there's a few players it's hard to say are successes or failures, most obviously Sigurdsson, Chadli, Sissoko, Llorente, Dempsey and Vorm Saha's the only player who jumps out as a "Meh" signing
A bit **** that a club our size can’t spend peanuts...seems like we are hiding behind this Covid thing more than most. oh yeh the stadium...I forgot..all of a sudden it affects transfer funds too
In the past six months we've made £0.00 on food and drink on matchdays while numerous events have been cancelled If you don't think that's related to the drop in available funding, I don't suggest you play Cities Skylines
It does though to be fair mate, especially when it isn’t self funding itself at the moment, so we’re having to pay that off with funds likely set aside for other things (and why we likely took out the loan). Just rough guesstimating here but we had 5 home games remaining I think before covid stopped fans going, if say average of £60 a ticket for a 60,000 seater stadium that means we’ve lost out on roughly £18m alone just from ticket sales, then food and drink at the stadium which I think averages between £800k-£1m so that’s possibly up to £23m we’ve lost out on. Then all the non-football events that got cancelled too, I reckon that would’ve brought in a decent penny, especially the Joshua fight. I think we definitely got hit harder than any Prem side. Missing out on CL this season as well means for 20/21 our revenue is gonna be a lot lower than the last few years so that’s probably playing a part in how we spend. It is only City and Chelsea spending big money so far too. Chelsea are also making up for last season.
At some point the pundits might criticise the Chavs and Manc clubs for exploiting their ill-gotten riches while other clubs are blighted by Covid-related shortfalls just so they can shore up their positions for a few years ...right?
Same for every club...tv revenue still filtering in...that’s same for everyone too Still it’s us who have the pauper’s mentality of 1 in and 1 out and we currently sit at around 3mill net spend in Jose’s first summer transfer window...I’ll bare that in mind when judging the manager this season the ambition is extremely limited but for ENIC and their disciples it’s par for the course Anyway...I believe we should be more adventurous and have the tools Edited Spurf
I’m sick of excuses every time it’s time to spend money...like I do t see them come out of the woodwork. before it was we got the money but Poch doesn’t want to spend it and everyone was chomping on that excuse I don’t believe we are in any danger if we spend a few mill above net spend to get the manager what he needs
Thats fine mate I think he’s a greedy bastard who isn’t interested in football he’s like a noose around the clubs neck as an owner he’s had his day and got us where his ambitions will allow us. Now he’s just hogging the ownership and I can’t see any other solutions for another direction since ENIC have and will our price any interested parties. i e spend my whole life supporting the club so it’s all about life commitments...Joe has had his day...he really would **** off and spend his last few years building g on his Art collection the tight fisted ****er
You really think we are flirting with that kind of threat...no wonder ENIC have the fan base over a barrel.
If you adopt your policy that's where we would end. 600 people work for Spurs you would risk their jobs to satisfy your ego.
