    Best before dates can be ignored to a certain extent, so stuff like eggs, will always generally keep pass their best before date, if stored properly. If in the freezer section, best before dates can be ignored, but will act as a good guide to it's age, as you need a 1 month + cycle, somethings much longer.

    It's the Sell By dates you have to watch, especially with stuff like prawns, fish in general and chicken, the first will put you in hospital. NEVER eat out of date shellfish!

    It's just knowing your food stuffs really.

    Most eggs in the supermarket have a display date and then a best before, which I think is a week later, but generally they will keep another week pass that. It's the same with a lot of food waste, people are chucking stuff out needlessly. Like you say, some simple tests will tell you if its ok or not.
