there was someone on the beeb earlier who said the real problem with schools was teacher to teacher infection rather than pupil-pupil or teacher - pupil . From that report it looks like she had a point !.

The scope of that proposal are very limited, and the fact that only a high court could sign it off would automatically preclude many from being able to afford the actual choice.

There should be a grown up debate around end of life care, but the starting point needs to be the current situation, which many don’t seem to understand and virtually the entire medical profession don’t discuss openly.

My initial thoughts are it is noticeable most of the high profile cases have involved people with Motor Neurone Disease as it is a compelling one as the individual has no lessening of mental capacity and is not normally inherently painful however you will end up in a body that has shut down waiting to die presumably fro pneumonia . In these cases the individual can make the point that they are not physically capable of committing suicide at the time they would wish to access assisted dying .
My view is the moment if such a law gets passed it would inevitably lead to two things
    a) Individuals requesting it as they don't wish to be a burden on their family which may have be due to financial reasons .
    b) the scope of people "eligible" would inevitably be widened and that people could be making decisions far too early before they have grown used to their new life.

If people don't believe the scope would be widened i suggest they look at the abortion laws as i'm fairly certain no one back in 1967 expected 200,000 per annum .

Plus you'll hit 60k posts tonight....

Many want to end their life, as seen by the rapid rise in suicides lately, but these won't apply, it's a terminal medical thing, those nearing the end..

I honestly don't think any of us know really what we'd think, as hopefully non of us are ever in this position.

yeah, it was just my own feeling on this beyond what was proposed.

As with most things, there are many that feel that once you start crossing that line that things will keep shifting in that direction. I would hope we would know where the line is else we will only ever end up moving in one direction of that line.

yeah your article was pretty good on that front.

It's legal in belgium and holland with it showing the for and against. Some people are happy with it. One of the originals who voted for it is now against it as originally he only wanted it for people who were dying to be able to use it. Instead it has been redefined so someone leading a miserable life (see the girl who suffers from depression) can now be used to legally end her life.

My concern is we already cart our elderly off to care homes. How convenient it would be also to send them to sleep. I've got some big beefs around care homes, and they are nothing to do with the government. There are many cultures, within the UK, that look after and respect their elderly a damn sight better than our all christian believing white folk do....you can probably tell I have a beef on this topic.

I'll quote what Bobby said...'I'm for it in the most extreme scenarios. things like MS, Alzheimers Paralysed etc mainly because i would think i would want to go once i reach that .'

This is not a beef at Bobby, only an example of now my thoughts from that, we are near some of the biggest break throughs on Parkinson and in turn what could eventually lead to a cure for Alzheimers. But will the attempts to find a cure continue, if it's easier to send us to sleep, because people then would argue, there's other more important things we could be researching and spending the money on!

Evolution is about pain, without pain we do not learn. We as a human race, need to evolve to survive, as soon has you take the easy option, the cycle of life becomes time limited forever. The future exploration of our universe, needs us to break down these barriers. We have to meet these challenges, not just stop the clock from ticking, otherwise, one day when our Earth stops revolving, the future will look back on us, and say but you didn't try to find a way. Without pain, there is no gain for the human race.

Now I need to go lay down <whistle>

We help people die in many situations against thy will on a regular basis .... Why not let someone decide for themselves what's best.
