Abstinence is not in the slightest bit unrealistic. People have been waiting to get married before having sex for a looooong time. I am not making a stand against condoms. I am making a stand against the notion that the head of the Catholic Church is at fault for the AIDS pandemic in sub saharan Africa. this is just not true.
But the message of the church is very unrealistic. Why send out a message that so many will fail to achieve? What's the point? It's like my manager asking for a 50% increase in productivity. He might as well not bother because it's no going to happen, asking for something so unlikely is just likely to make people think "**** it, there's no chance of that. I'll just give up". But if he asked for a 10% increase, we might make it, so we're more likely to try. Abstinence = 50% increase Contraception = 10% increase
