Tbf at that time he was one of the best around. I was pleased we signed him. Shame after a few errors, his confidence really took a tumble, has still been a good servant and wish him all the best. What he gets paid wasn't solely down to him.
I also think what he gets paid in the contract was earned on the pitch at the time...and he hasn't gone off form because he has sat on his money, he just had a serious of unfortunate events that killed his confidence.
It seemed that most of the negativity from fans was more because what he earnt rather than the performances he put in for saints.
To be FF, he is a good shot stopper, he is big and intimidating, I always thought his problem was his hesitance to come out and collect, it was almost as if he wasn’t sure/confident to do it. He wasn’t the quickest at getting down either but when his confidence was high he could be almost unbeatable, he has had a few games like that, it’s just a shame that GK position is such a hard position to build confidence back up, you don’t and can’t get much game to do that, unlike a striker that can ride out a drought if play is good and/or someone else is scoring. You just don’t get that privilege in goal, for obvious reasons
Yeah, is the unfortunate part, where the ball rolled into the net when he should have saved it, or his failure to command his area despite being one of the biggest people to ever walk the earth.
I've been watching a few highlights of old Saints games on youtube and I was surprised by the number of times the ball squirmed under Fraser Forster's body only for him to reach back and scoop the ball back from the goal. I thought he was a good shot stopper but it seems at times he flattered to deceive.
Fraser Forster is our Gareth Bale. He is overpaid and he knows it. No one else is going to pay him £80,000 a week. Even if he doesn't play he wins. He has a good life and he probably doesn't want to move around on loan anymore and is happy to see out his contract. I don't blame him for that and his relationship with Saints probably is a good one as he is being professional. Be honest who would change jobs if you knew you were being paid way more than what the job is worth.
Fraser Foster is a good keeper and an excellent shot stopper. As with many good shot stoppers, he needs a good defence in front of him to clear balls that he parries. He did not have this at Saints a couple of years back and his confidence took a knock as a result. I am hoping that our defensive frailties have been sorted out for the new season and this will help if he is called upon. It is worth noting that there are a significant number of keepers these days that go through crisis of confidence phases. E.g. Jack Butland. Sometimes a change in scene is all that is required. Foster's spell at Celtic did him no harm at all. A swap of Gunn / Butland (temp or permanent) may not be a bad thing.
Exactly this, a good defence clearing what the gk parries, tightening angles to opposing strikers and also forcing long shots is a dream for a keeper. It is no coincide the performances and confidence went the same time as our defence. A change of scenery can be good, fresh start,
On the one hand, he quite possibly cost us the Cup Final. On the other hand, he pulled off at least one near impossible save - at Anfield - on the way to getting us there. But I absolutely think it was the performances tgat provoked the negativity from fans.
Agree. Forster was class. He had personal problems and his confidence took a beating. The revolving door manager policy since koeman didn’t help. He should have moved to play, but on a huge salary and with psychological/confidence issues he was unlikely to find a good fit.
Did the mannequin have nipples or no nipples? They seem to fall into these 2 categories. No idea why!
