Interesting read. The long lauded Spanish Government have an issue with Covid spreading again in care homes in particular, and a massive rise in cases. They point out their hospitalisation rates and deaths are really low, which is usual as the virus is just taking off.

This virus just doesn’t give up, and no country knows much about it.

I hope all that lambasted the British Government will be doing the same about the Spanish one, or lets face it, just back off as were all pretty ****ed with what is going on.

There will be further waves. The question is what one does when those waves hit. Do you aggressively move to introduce restrictions, or do you try to muddle through?

That's the question the UK needs to ask itself: are people ready for that? Are people willing to obey another lockdown if it comes to that? Because autumn is likely to bring it back in force.

Muddle through gets my vote. It’s the British way; we’ve muddled through everything from Bubonic Plague, The Great Fire of London and The Blitz.

Oh I quite agree, I just recall the vast masses, vicious in their imperialism of how bad we managed this as a nation, with 110% of the blame on the current UK government. My view has always been I think this will get worse than it has already, before any attempts of it settling down, in one way or another.

oh, and @Archers Road - totally agree, we do muddle through, although i'd suggest we have some of the best scientists around, who all appear to be working globally in tandem, there are some good things to come out of all this.

Well, I hope that works out. The available evidence around the globe is that the muddle through option has proven to be neither better economically nor in terms of health outcomes, but I'm also aware that a lot of people simply do not have the stamina to go back into stasis for months if needed.

Yeah, another strict, prolonged lockdown isn't an option imo. We may have figures available to measure the number of lives lost to the virus, but we are a long way from being able to measure the wider cost to health (especially mental health) or the economy.

Absolutely. I do think that there's a presumption that 'more open' is necessarily better for mental health, and health in general, and that still very much needs to be proved out. I know people living in parts of the American South that opened and remained open as cases spiked, and I certainly didn't get the impression that their mental health was benefiting markedly.

There are things to learn from the initial outbreak. Protecting care homes being the most important. Reinforcing care that individuals can take to lessen the chances of spreading the virus. Revisit track and trace to ensure that local knowledge informs decision making to name but a few. Muddling through is one thing, not learning from past mistakes is another.. The awarding of contracts to companies with no experience in the sector they are operating in seems to me to be indefensible. Let those with expertise, largely those with skills in public sector procurement do their jobs. These tasks in dealing with a pandemic while we hopefully develop a vaccine should not be driven by political financial idealism but rather by those who have the skills..

Pretty sure living in the American South would impact badly on my mental health, virus or no virus. Not that there's any shortage of things to stress about in the UK, but at least our equivalent of Maga hat wearing shouty mad people aren't armed.

If the UK government watch and learn I will cut them some slack, but if they don’t then I won’t.
Never forget Johnson wanted herd immunity.
Never forget that he was slow to react in every measure thereafter.
The Spanish government at least tried to head it off, whilst Johnson just opened the door and ushered it in.
He doesn’t deserve to be given an easy ride, especially as he and his cabinet are now pretty much blaming everyone but themselves for their multiple failings, and especially as Tory voters never hold them accountable for anything, which is why they ride roughshod over everyone who objects to the way they behave.
The fresh impetus in Spain as I pointed out 2 weeks ago, seems in the most part to be caused by young adults socialising, so maybe we should be getting ahead of the game and imposing the strictest regime on the bars/pubs and restaurants etc, with legal enforcement of rules against the public and the bars.

We are appallingly badly led in this country. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise. But I'm not sure our country's response to Covid has been a complete failure either.

I agree, although I think that is a lucky accident.
My problem with this government is that nothing was really put into place that took into account the best thing for people, their first thought was the economy hence the attempt at the minimal disruption, herd immunity route to get through this. Then the lockdown, which would have been useful if the borders had also been closed...again, it was all about the economy and keeping Britain open for business.
The way that hospitals turned 100% of their resources over to Covid at the expense of every other medical treatment, causing endless suffering for cancer patients, cancelled operations and numerous other necessary but routine treatment just seemed so knee jerk and certainly has had a massive knock on effect. From a personal point of view, my 83 year old mum should have had a hip replacement in March. She'd been waiting 9 months, and has now waited nearly another 6 months. She can't stand for very long and walking is very difficult...I think she'd have risked Covid to get that done.
I appreciate that governments around the world are ****ing things up in various ways, and the whole thing is a new unknown to everyone, but ours just seems careless - of people's lives, of mental health, of blame, the list goes on.

I hope she gets her new hip soon. My dad had a hip replacement in 2014, it made a huge difference to his quality of life.

No we ****ing haven't. When downright incompetence and laziness combined with a callous disregard for life stares you in the face for weeks on end that is not quick to judge. I will not be an apologist for the buffon and his apprentices killing our people and ****ing up our country as well as constantly lying.

I don't want to offend you but you have just written the most hypocritical load of twisted logic and bullshit I have ever read. You and people who share that view are very dangerous and fill me with foreboding. Next you'll be telling us what a decent chap Trump is.

Well I'd rather chat to Trump at a dinner party than you.

Your views are your own, as are mine. I literally couldn't give a toss over your views of the government or anything else.

Personally I find you a miserable, entitled old man, whos views fit his agenda, and I'd rather give Boris a ****ing blow job than you the steam off my piss.

Now, you run along and have a lovely evening.

Giving Boris a blow job just about epitomises your ultra right wing views. You swallow enough of his ****. If your happy with incompetent lazy complacency good ****ing luck to you. Thank **** its you who will inherit the **** tfuture Johnson is creating and not me.

Well my generation has inherited enough **** from your parasitic bunch of cronies.

By the way, your generalistic approach couldnt be more wrong. I'm not a Tory, and I dont follow politics, mainly because of ****ing bigots like you, and I'm just sick to death of you and people like you vehemently shoving any political view down anyone's throat in earshot.

But, as you say, with anger like yours, you wont have to deal with it. Good for you :emoticon-0109-kiss:
