Recently finished A Short History of the Motorcycle by Richard Hammond. Worth a look if you're into bikes.
Just finished reading 'Shane Bauer - American Prison: A Reporters Undercover Journey Into The Business Of Punishment'. Despite the abolition of slavery more than 150 years ago Bauer's book is a terrible indictment of the southern states brazen attempts at keeping a cheap, African/American work-force. The book might be a bit niche for some but as an example of mans continuing inhumanity to man (both inmates AND guards) it's a shocking eye opener.
It has tons of history in it, how the penal system developed from abolition days up to the present - I think to most European's its pretty shocking.
I'll not spoil it for you dennis. Except to say it doesn't have a happy ending - in more ways than one.
Recently read "Bittersweet" a biog. of Clifford T. Ward. A warts & all description of the man. A complicated guy and a family control freak. His wife is the person I most felt for. Still, I like his compositions - his own reluctance to play live and play as the industry demanded cost him financially.
Just finished reading "'First In - Last Out" By Reg Kemp and Michael Wood. Memories of the role of the Norland crew in the Falklands War. Anyone interested. It's a must read. Very well written and full of great stories. Well done fellas, loved every page.
Finally finished my poetry book and charity calendar so can sit down and breath.....(exhale sound) This is my read for the next cpl of nights, met him last week, had a cracking chat and cuppa, good lad.
Any book recommendations as we go into lockdown#3? I was bought three for Christmas, read the Thursday Murder Club first, found it unexceptional and I'm a bit surprised at how well its sold. I'm now half way through Shuggie Bain and it's outstanding and a worthy Booker winner. Next will be John Cooper Clarke autobiography.
I'm not surprised. It has a high profile, popular author and huge amounts of free publicity on television. I've not read it so I have no idea whether it is good or not. I do know there are plans for sequels. Publishing is all about money.
